This is the top wood that my mom and I dug out of the stacks a few nights ago:

Even though you've already seen this wood, it seems appropriate to include it on your thread.

Man, I dreamed up a very similar MKD 4-string on the Custom Quote Generator a couple of months ago.  Only differences are that mine was spec'd with a blue buckeye burl top 'n' back, blue side LEDs and standard Sig electronics.  Even the neck laminates were the same.  You should wind up with a killer cool bass, Jim.

Hifi, Ho, King,

Thanks! First time I've ever done anything like this and am looking forward to watching it take shape. Is it done yet?  Is it done yet?  Is it done yet?  :-)

Have you considered getting continueous woodplates for the back, Jim?  They really look awesome -especially on highly-figured woods like Coco Bolo and Quilted Maple.

One other thing you might consider: they've got a REALLY bitchin' amber tint I've seen 'em do with Maple basses... you might ask 'em about it, I think there are probably an example or two floating around on the site.  Maybe they could show you/refer you to a picture.

I think I'd have to get the amber tint if I were getting a Quilted Maple Alembic... but that's me!

Oh yeah, one other thing.  I recommend you consider kicking out a few extra bucks for 3-position Q switches... they'll add a lot of flexibility.

Look forward to seeing your Balance K get built, Jim.  It's looking like they'll be working on ours about the same time, so we'll see 'em built together!

Post by: jtussing on March 03, 2007, 05:17:32 AM
Thanks King!  I will ask about the tint.  I had thought about the continuous wood backplates but didn't think it was really worth the $ to me. Besides, I am kinda going for that nautical feel that brass gives. Come to think of it the tint might even accentuate that. I am getting the 3-pos Q's though (0/4/8). I'm also replacing the pickup selector switch with a regular 3-pos toggle too - I don't like that weird pie-shaped selector they use.

Anyway, thanks for the great advice!

Regards,
Jim

As soon as I spy something interesting, I'll post it here. You'll see that the work kind of comes through in clumps. There's a lot of gathering materials, and setting up operations, so the next thing you'll see will probably be the body. I've noticed many stacks forming in the glue area, but there's just not interesting looking yet.

More goodies, your bass has landed in the carving department:

The Maple looks really flat after sanding. This one isn't even finished with the sanding yet, and it will look worse before it looks better again. But don't worry - the fact that you can see anything going on with the figure at this point means it will all leap back when the finish hits it, since it's a really nice piece.

YYAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!   It looks wonderful, Mica!  Thanks again for the pics!

Just a question - I notice that you went with the 2-up/3-down headstock like Shim's instead of the 3-up/2-down headstock which is usual.  Is there a reason for this?  Not complaining at all, just curious!

Again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !  :-)

...and, did you go with a smaller headstock than normal?  The neck looks really wide up at the nut and I'm wondering whether it's just perspective / optical.

Sorry for the split questions - just excited to see it.

A word on feel and sound of the new bass:

Well, I've played it for a day and a half now and have some observations to share if anyone is interested.

Basses I have played in the past include a 5-string American Deluxe Ash Fender Jazz and several Yamaha TRB series, primarily TRB5II.  The neck of the Alembic was an amalgam of the two basses actually, using the front-back depth of the Yamaha neck (didn't have to change anything but it is thinner than the Fender), the nut width of the Fender Jazz bass and something approximating the Alembic classic taper (narrower bridge).  I thought because of the narrow strings at the bridge that my right hand would have the most new learning to do, but my left hand would be basically comfortable.

What actually happened is that the left hand is didn't even have to adapt to anything and the right hand adapted almost instantly to the narrower strings. Biased of course, but this is by far and away the most comfortable instrument I've ever played. After the first 30 seconds I knew there would be no trouble with playing the show with it.

The action is very low which I requested. It needs a slight truss rod adjustment to eradicate some buzz on the low B from the 5th fret down, but the buzz is so slight I'm not really messing with it right now. We'll let it get used to Ohio before we decide to monkey with anything.  The action is really soft - the Alembic strings have plenty of movement in them and they bend easily for vibrato and expressiveness.  The top of the neck is the perfect width for me and I play it much easier than my Fender.  All 24 frets are easily reachable with a comfortable grip.

The feel of the bass is hard to describe. It is completely solid and firm - like it's carved from a single piece of wood and like that wood is very dense. Dead spots on the fretboard seem basically nonexistent. There is a slight reduction of sustain in the normal spot (G-string 5th / 6th frets) but nothing like most other basses I've played.  Besides, the general sustain on this bass is so much greater than anything I've played that I imagine even the 5th fretted G would probably out-sustain an open A on some basses.

The sound produced by this instrument should be registered as a weapon. The lows are unbelievably full and the highs are absolutely crystal. I play through a GK biamped set of cabs with horns, 1x18 and 2x12. The EQ is completely flat but I do add a touch of contour which very slightly hypes the lows and highs. When you open the filters all the way I imagine you could break glass with the harmonics. I have a home recording setup and will put some sounds down for you all to hear. The output level is HUGE on this thing. You must hit the -10db input pad on the GK or it will easily distort.

The control layout is a little tighter than I'm used to but I absolutely love the four-way pickup selector switch. Getting the separate volumes to the right levels for balance is a little tough because of the huge effect it has on the sound. A tiny adjustment can make a huge change to the character of the tone, so you want to get it set properly for what you're trying to do and leave it. The pickup selector switch lets you do that by having the off position.

The pickup setup is something I haven't seen before. The bridge pickup is much closer to the strings than the neck one. I suppose this is in order to get equalized volume from both when in stereo mode but don't know yet (don't have the cables to play it in stereo yet).

The side LEDs are very bright. Easily visible in all lighting conditions. I could imagine a dimmer switch feature in Alembic's future!

Overall craftsmanship is outrageous. Everything looks like it was melted together. The bridge looks like something you could use for surgery. The one complaint I have here is that there is a very slight rough spot on the side of the fingerboard above the first fret. You can't really see it unless you put it in the right light but if you slide your hand across it you can definitely feel it. It is probably not something I will seek to correct as it is so minor.

Also, the tailpiece has a brushed look that I didn't expect. I decided against the gold dip on the remaining hardware but did expect a polished brass instead of the brushed look. I don't know but it looks like it will tarnish easily. If it does I will probably have it plated if possible.

Anyway, those are my immediate thoughts. Lest there be any doubt I love my new bass!

Regards to all,
Jim

P.S. Anyone have news on Mica is everything ok there?

Well Jim,

You have just excited me to another level and implanted somemore patience in me as I wait for my Series II custom. And on top of your beautiful and articulate discription, I take into consideration that you have played way more, way nicer basses than me to boot.

So I am ecstatic. You have a great way with words that make it almost like I am playing it myself.

I didn't understand your explanation of the 4 way switch making things easier because of the off position. Could you please elaborate on that when you have time.

Also you mentioned the need for a dimmer switch in the future for Led's when in fact that is what I have ordered on mine so which was an option that they offered me as I have the blue side's and front Led's coming. So unless you mean something else they are available.

Regarding the brushed brass bridge, I have one on my Excel. I was taken back when I first saw your nice bass in the pictures and had to keep looking over and over again because I thought that it looked like what you had there and was hoping that you didn't. But in any case, as I said I do have one and considering that I am in one of the most humid city's in the world, mine has held up surprisingly well. It does have a few tarnished almost like rust looking streaks but I think it was coated as it still looks pretty good considering how much I leave my bass out of the case in this humid climate. But this is something that I often notice on new basses coming out of this thread is that there are alot of these going out surprisingly to me because they would look so much better with the polished or gold plated and as Mica has said in threads alot easier to clean in the future. So I would definitely like to stress to Alembic to make the polished a standard item and brushed a requested item.

Another thing I would like to ask you is what you meant by not having the right cord to play stereo. Is it because you have a Series I that you didn't receive a stereo setup? I thought that it would be a stereo bass and that you would receive the cord and splitter box with your bass.

Lastly since I am here in Hawaii, the constant dread that I have is getting the bass home. Even if I were to buy it a airline seat with me they wouldn't let it ride in a seat on the plane would they? I am stressing about the transportation after so many threads lately. How did your box fare with UPS? Did you have the extra costing wood box that Alembic offers these days? How did the outside of the package look?

I think that is about enough out of me for now and I know it's getting late over there so I don't expect you to answer this long post right away.

Thanks again for such an uplifting post and more power to you as you enjoy your new Love.

Aloha and Mahalo, Paul da Plumma

Jim:

A dimmer can be added to LEDs very easily.  I found the side LEDs on my Further were too bright for my tastes.  I brought it back to Santa Rosa and they wired in a pot and mounted it in the electronics cavity in less than 30 minutes.  If I wanted to drill another hole, it could easily be added to the other pots on top so you could adjust on the fly.  I tend to find a setting I like and leave it there, so I don't mind having to take off the back plate to adjust the LEDs.  You should look, there might even be such a pot in there now.  When I had mine added, Susan was talking about making it standard on all LED equipped instruments.

Sorry Jim,

One other thing, I love real low action also. Do you find that for slap and pop style of playing that lower is better for you? I've heard so say that they like the action higher for slapping. Could you also help me with that? If you'd like we can talk over the phone when you have time as I am sure you are very busy.

Could I also ask your opinion on whether or not you would find it helpful to have bass and treble knobs on this bass? When you say you set your setting farely flat on the amp does that mean that the amplification of the preamp in these basses is enough without having added knobs on board?

Last but not least, what color Led's did you get? They have told me that I would need the dimmer because I have the blue's and they are the brightest. That is the reason that I have one coming on mine.

Sorry for so much, take your time to answer if you have time.

Thanks again, Paul

Hey Jim, just a quick note about the tailpiece concern. It should not tarnish as it is finished in a clear coat. That might be why they have the brushed look. The finish might stick better that way. The bridge itself is unfinished and will tarnish but it takes some time and you can always clean it. But yeah plated hardware is less hassle.
Title: Re: Jim's Custom Signature Deluxe

Thanks for all the comments & glad you seemed to enjoy my rambling.  This attempts to answer all the questions between this post and my last. If I miss one just let me know.

- I'm THRILLED to hear that Mica and the little one are well!

- Thanks for the info on the LED dimmer! Wasn't aware of that. If I decide that I really need one I will have it done!

- Thanks for the info on the brushed bridge being clearcoated!  That makes me feel better.

- My LEDs are red.

- The four-way switch makes it easier because it has four settings:  Neck pickup only, bridge pickup only, both pickups and no pickups (off). The no pickups setting is great for the stage because you can set the volume knobs exactly where you want them and then simply switch the pickups off until you want to play. Then when you switch them on the sound is exactly what you expect. The alternative is to turn both volume knobs down when you set the bass down and back up when you pick it up. Unless you play them all the way open this is hard to do for me in the heat of the moment.

- I do have a switched stereo jack which is part of the anniversary package, but don't have a stereo quarter-inch cable. I need to get one in order to split the signal to two different channels when the stereo switch is set to stereo.

- UPS handled the package very well. The outside of the box was undamaged. I didn't get the wood one - just cardboard. Inside it was the bass case surrounded by styrofoam peas to keep it still within the cardboard box. It was a very cosy fit. Inside the case the bass was extremely well protected. I've only had one experience but wouldn't hesitate to use UPS.

- I prefer low action for all types of play, including slap and thump. I have heard people play with much higher action and they do get a very clear sound, but they also work harder. I can keep the sound clear with low action by simply using very light touch. It takes some time to control the volume of the pops with lower action, but it can definitely be done. Everyone's different though.

I think that's it!

Take care!
- Jim

Thanks Jim, and all good answers.

I see what you are saying about the 4 way switch so you don't even have to change the original volume you are set at when going on break or just setting the instrument down for a bit.

Now I understand that you have a stereo 1/4 jack as I was thinking of the 5 point jack.

Great to here about UPS as that is all I have ever even had over here in Hawaii. I've never had anything damaged and I order alot of things from the mainland.

I'm still working on slap style and so I like to get opinions on what the majority of people use and low seems to work the best for me since I can work better with different volumes or intonations. I can imagine that I will be able to set or split my lows and highs much easier with the Series having seperate volumes for each pick-up.

So thanks for the responses, it's so cool to communicate with my fellow bass players from abroad and really helps me alot.

Now, can I borrow your bass for a gig tomorrow?haha

Take it easy, and I bet your red Led's look nice with your beautiful quilts. WOOOOOH!

Goodnight, Paul

Hey Paul!  My pleasure dude. I hope the storm is treating you to a good light show but leaving you alone otherwise!  I can still close my eyes and see the beautiful place where you live.  So you keep those eyes open for the rest of us and enjoy it!

Slap is great and there are tons of styles within it. One thing I'm really into is the judicious use of speed with slapping. So in the middle of a funky line that is slow enough for everyone to really groove on, you throw some 16th or even 32nd note triplets in the at the end or in the middle of the line and it gets people eyes blinking a little. For that I think low action really helps.

Another quick thought. It seems to me like low action gives you more range of sounds to get from pop & slap. For instance (and this will be hard to make sense of so I'll include an example in the sounds I'll send around), there's a peculiar sound that I can get by dropping my thumb on a string and being lazy about the rebound. Normally the thumb just bounces off the string after the string hits the frets and you get a very full note. But if you kind of force the thumb to wait a millisecond before rebounding you can get a really clean harmonic sound to the note. It's like the main note is weak but all the harmonics are still strong.  I liken it to the whistle that a lead guitar player in a rock or metal band can get by picking the string with the pick and then letting his thumb hit the string right behind it. That's a surprising sound coming from a bass and it seems people enjoy it.

Anyway, gotta run. Just more thoughts.

Dude, you are gonna LOVE your series ii!

Jim, If you were here I'd ask to hire you to be my teacher. By the way, a couple of things-the storm is gone and it's a nice clear dawn this morn as I have been getting up at 2 a.m. the last three mornings to watch the British open and this morning I can actually hear it compared to the last two days where the rain was so loud on my metal roof that I just had to watch it.

It's funny how just as you were starting to explain about slap in the second paragraph I was going d-d-d   d-d-d in my mind like 32nd notes and then you said it! I understand what you are talking about and that is why I like the low action also. The problem is I am not quite there yet. Still working on those and playing/timing overall as I don't play as much as I should.

I would love to here your samples when you get a chance so that I can see what you are talking about. I think I understand what you are describing though.

When you talked about your bass feeling like one piece of solid wood I think that really says something for just one of their key players in Alembic and that is the man in the spray booth. I think this guy puts on some real magic of several coats that really lock these things together. And the guy has to be good to get that much on these babies and be so clear. Of course there is much more to it than just him but it's all those keys together that make such Works of Art.

Ya, I am definitely on the edge of my life long seat awaiting the most awesome thing in my life besides my beautiful son and wife, and I must say it's close between the three. Did I say that? Yes, Alembic definitely has the edge in our lives.

Thanks Jim, I'll await your sound bytes. Paul

Hey all, finally got some time to record a few minutes of sounds from my MK5. Used a few different settings but didn't get elaborate and it's a bit messy, but whatever. :-)

It is recorded directly into my PC, so it is very dry and there's no amp involved.  Live through an amp in a room it has a lot more body.

It's song #1 at my jam bands myspace site, so open this link and select it on the right side of the screen:

http://www.myspace.com/freshbuzzuppercut (http://www.myspace.com/freshbuzzuppercut)

Anyway, enjoy!

That sounds nice!  I like your slap, especially the triplets, and your harmonic licks.  That little harmonic riff near the beginning reminded me of String Cheese for some reason; I really liked that.

Now I'm listening to some of the other cuts; great keyboard work!

And nice vocals too!

Awesome and ditto's of Dave, Jim.

Whoa!!! GReat riffs all over the place. The tones are just unbelievable! Man I can't wait for mine now. It's those kind of posts that help keep us patient.

Hey Jim, you out there?

I just had to go to your sound bites again and get some skunk funk back in my blood to thin it out for the future arrival. I also read through alot of your thread again and enjoyed the process of changes and additions as well as all of the nice and helpful comments that came out of all the members. It is sure awesome having this site to learn and exchange from.

Hopefully I'll be seeing my beauty by end of the month if the flu didn't completely wipe out the whole shop Did you see it with the first coat on in Spray? It's looking good!!!

How are things going? Hope all is well. You sure make that bass sing in your sound bites. and the pictures are great also. You have an awesome band!

Take it easy, Aloha, Paul

Hey there Paul!

So sorry I've been away.  Have been working and playing and playing and working and way too much playing and working, etc.

Glad you have enjoyed the funk.  This thing is a little monster.  I still can't get over how small it feels.  All this weight but all this littleness is really amazing. It give it such a feel of mass that you just feel like you're playing a rock. Funking on a friggin rock.  It's so massive.

There will be some more sounds coming soon so stay tuned. In the mean time can't wait to hear what yours sounds like dude!

Mahalo,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply, and I am glad you are doing great.

May I ask you, are you using the Alembic strings?, or what strings do you use?

My friend said he was enjoying thinner strings and with his new lazer pick-up guitar and he was still getting nice low bottom with them.

What do you say? I'll get more specific about his new guitar in a minute.

OK, it's an infrared bridge bass. I'll post the name tomorrow. But anyway I just want to get your opinion on strings.

Thanks again, and I sure am impressed with your sound bytes.

Aloha, Paul

Mica or whoever is doing these pages these days, I'm considering ordering a fretless version of this same bass which was built in 2007.

Do you keep complete details on the basses you build such that it could match in every detail (with allowance for wood grain variation of course)?

Thanks!

Wow, Jim, that top is COMPLETELY out of control.  Once it's sanded and finished this is going to be one of the all time great Alembic quilt tops.  Already it reminds me of wind on water.  Which would make a cool name for a Featured Custom, methinx.

Not quite in finishing, but recently routed. Routing is sort of a subset of carving. You can see there's more carving and fine sanding to go:

Won't be too much longer 'till it's in the finish department.

Uh oh.  Mica, I just realized something.  I think we're missing a switch here!  Since I have anniversary electronics and side LEDs, I think there should be the following:

1/4 jack
Stereo / Mono switch by the jack
Q switch x2
LED switch
4-way pickup selector with stand-by
two volume knobs
two LP Filter knobs

Am I missing something? If not, what can we do about it?

Thanks!
Jim

Also, could you please do a very quick mockup (text is ok) of which controls are what? I think that would help this discussion a lot (and I could fantasize more accurately).

Thanks!

Hi Jim,

I know I'm not Mica, but maybe I can help :-)

I know that on mine they didn't drill the stereo/mono switch until close to the end of the build.  Also, I was thinking about an LED switch, and they said it would go in later, too, so I think yours is normal for this stage of production.

As to layout, let me try this...

........................selector
jack....bridge vol..........neck vol
....................bridge Q...........neck Q
........bridge lpf ......... neck lpf

Hope this helps,

Charles

P.S. That has got to be the most stunning piece of quilt I've ever seen.  I bet it is going to explode when the finish hits it! MMMMM!

Mica,

Per our conversation (and for the benefit of those listening), the reason soon-to-be-my bass one hole short is that the LED switch is never drilled by program, but only by hand.  So what we see here is the Anniversary drill pattern sans one LED switch.

Let that be a lesson to all you out there! Doubt the Mothership at your own peril!  :-)

Peace.

And Charles, thanks a ton you were exactly right! Appreciate the thoughts on the maple. I was stunned when I first saw it. I almost asked for it going through the online QM woodpile but when I saw the piece of wood was added in 2004 I thought it couldn't possibly still be there. I almost pooped when I saw that Mica & Susan had picked it for me. I know - TMI.... :-)

Thanks & regards,
Jim

Wuh-HOW!  Thank you so much, Alembic and thanks everyone for the gasps! I'm in Princeville on Kauai at the moment and the only thing I have to look at this on is my Crackberry. Even at hideously low resolution I've already very nearly had a couple accidents of a hygenic nature staring at these pictures. Bias notwithstanding this is simply the most beautiful piece of art I've ever seen.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post these for me. Mica and Susan, thank you so much for your top wood selection!

Man Jim,

I sure hope my Quilted Coco Bolo comes out nice because I had your Maple on order  before I changed to QCB. That is nice bro. Good on! Just to sit and look at something that nice while you are playing must Stoke the heck outta ya. I can't imagine the sound.

Without going and looking up everything, what's the major difference in the Anniversary and the Series if you got time to answer me? If not, don't worry, I know you are on your vacation. I can look it up but I thought you might want to describe to me what you are expecting as far as sound difference goes.

I stayed at the Coconut Palms for my wedding anniversary back in 1983 but I understand it is closed down now. Have you seen it yet? It's near the Fern Grotto ride.

I also backpacked the Napali Coastline back in the Seventy's. I hiked in to the 12 mile beach then had Red's helicopter service pick me up and fly me out 3 days later. Had no cell phones then. Just planned it. Beautiful trek!

How long are you staying?

Aloha, Paul

Thanks guys!

To Paul, I will email you and may take you up on your offer - we want to travel to another island and look around. On the sound, bottom line is the anniversary is about the best I could do moneywise. With unlimited resources I would have gone with the series ii. I expect the mk5 to sound like satan feels about god...seriously low end with very clear, dishonorable intentions. :-) the series would sound like god feels about satan...perfectly.

Not going religious, just the best metaphore I can come up with eating sushimi at the Sushi Blues bar in Chin Yun Village in  Hanelai. :-)

Bill, been to tunnels and it's still a snorkel haven. Wonderful and scenic beach!

Thx!
Jim

When it's in the finish department, it looks about the same from day 1 until day done, so I usually don't post more photos while it's in finish.

Your bass is in the setup room now for pre-set. That's when the fingerboard gets levelled, the frets go in. If there are inlaid logos or plated hardware, these options are taken care of at this same time.

By Monday your bass will be back in finish to get the lat few coats of polyester applied.

We're getting down to the end of this long wait I hope.  I know my wait hasn't been half as long as some since I don't have custom inlays, but it has been terrible, sweet torture! And since this is my first alembic I have nothing with which to assuage my hunger. Maybe Alembic should make a few basses to lend out to people while they wait?

Anyway, thanks much for the warm wishes and keep well!

Ha!  Thanks Ho!  And thanks much for the update Mica. And I hope things are going well for you!

Susan responded to an email of mine that it would be ready to ship week of July 9.  I think that will work.  I have a show coming up at the Columbus Jazz festival the following week and was hoping to do a little marketing for ya (as if you need the business!). :-) It'll be close but in any event I can't wait to see my darling in person!

Although, I must say I am detecting a distinct tone of jealousy from my wife and she's becoming quite unreasonable...  Apparently she doesn't believe that a guitar hanger over the headboard of our bed with multiple dimmable tracklights focused on the enshrined location is a good idea?  Sacrilege!  Could be worse, I told her. I could just get a king size bed.  :-)

Jim

Hey all, my bass arrived!  You'll never believe this. I had an 11:30am show at a local jazz festival and was all but certain it wouldn't make it in time.  I had the UPS code and knew that it was on the truck for delivery.

So check this out. I pack up everything for the show including my fender jazz after waiting as long as possible for the delivery but no luck.  Oh well, right?  So on the way to the gig I see a UPS truck around downtown (fairly close to where I live) and stopped and asked him if he had my bass...and he did!  I showed him id and he gave me the box.

Opened it, took out the bass, played it a little (after nearly falling down over how it looked - OH MY GOD) and it felt great. So, I took it on stage and plugged it in. Heard it for the first time standing on stage with it!  The show was a blast and the bass sounded great although its player did miss a few notes here and there!  :-) Anyway, got tons of people coming up asking what the hell it was.

Pics will be coming later tonight - have to download the camera when I can.

Anyway, I love the bass. What a beautiful, beautiful work of art.

Thanks!

Hey thanks guys!  I'm taking my bass out into the park in a few minutes for a photo session. More pics will be coming very soon.  In the meantime, here's one I took yesterday of the back.  King, I didn't do continuous wood anywhere on this bass. Believe it or not I really wanted the brass - gives it a nautical instrument feel to me.  Also don't put too much stock in the back of the bass for decorations.

However, I did ask that Ron and Susan autograph the back of the bass under the finish. I tried to change that to the inside of the backplate but that change never made it through so it was done as originally designed. But, I love it!!!

Here's a pic of the back (http://picasaweb.google.com/jtussing/JimSCustomBass/photo#5089631476433658434).

Ok, there are about 10 more pics out there now. The link is right here (http://picasaweb.google.com/jtussing/JimSCustomBass). Go down towards the bottom for the new ones.

Tried to capture more detail for ya.  If you want more angles just let me know!

P.S. My fingers hurt. :-)

By the way, hot tip if you're looking to see real detail in these pics. When you go to the web album and view a picture (not in slideshow mode, but just by clicking on one from the album), it will come up with a menu on the right hand side that includes the option Download Photo.  If you do this, it downloads the high-def version of the picture, which is NOT what it shows you as you're viewing the album.

So, it is possible to easily get a very high quality version of any of these photos. Let me know if you have any problems!

Title: Signature on electronics plate.
Post by: jtussing on April 14, 2007, 02:35:03 PM
Hi Mica, originally I had discussed getting autographs on the wood itself on the back of the bass.  You thought that would be unwise and after having seen the FREAKING BEAUTIFUL wood there, I've thought the better of it and would rather just have the inside (hidden part) of the electronics cover autographed in permanent ink.

This is not intended to be an inconvenience, so if it is just ignore the request, but what I would like if possible is an autograph by Ron (given the space) and then pass it around the shop/office and let anyone who worked on the order initial/graffitti it to their liking - whatever as long as they don't cover up the autograph!  Anyway, this is just a novelty for my first (don't tell my wife) Alembic!

Please let me know if you have any questions and, again, if it's disruptive in any way just ignore.

Thanks!
Jim

Hey Mica!  I see you've been busy - just posting here to call your attention to the above post.  Figured you might have missed it in the deluge of posts over the last couple weeks. No big deal whether we do this or not - just thought it would be cool if it's not too disruptive.

Thanks!

Just closing this out. It looks like Mica never saw this. The autographs were done as we originally discussed, beneath the finish on the back of the bass. It actually looks very unique and cool.

But a good lesson for everyone: Make sure to get a confirmation of anything you do here. This is a good tool for discussing things and Mica's system of checking things off really works (this one was not checked off by her and I didn't confirm the request via any other route).

You can see the signature on the back of my bass here.  It's under the finish and well protected, and I really like how it turned out. Makes it very special.

Title: (x) No gold plating
Post by: jtussing on March 09, 2007, 09:20:12 PM
Hi Mica,

I had originally floated the idea of gold plating on the uncovered by deluxe hardware of my bass.  It's not in my price range so I wish to confirm that I don't want any gold plating beyond the standard for a sig deluxe.

Thanks!

Title: (x) Electronics
Post by: jtussing on March 01, 2007, 05:37:48 PM
Here are the electronics decisions we've made:

Upgraded to Anniversary Electronics (separate volumes replacing volume and pan; pickup selector switch; stereo output jack with stereo/mono switch) with the following custom changes (via Susan):

Upgrading the standard 8db 2-position Q switches to: 0/4/8db three-position Q switches.

Anniversary pickup selector switch changed to a standard 3-way toggle switch (neck/both/bridge) instead of one of those pie-shaped rotating switches (sorry don't know what they're called).

Thanks!

Confirmed that the work order reflects these items. You do realize you won't have a standby position with your change? Also, if you are using the collet knob or the top hat knob, we can put a regular round knob on the switch, the same as the rest of the controls. I've got them both in 1/4 shaft and 1/8 shaft.

Post by: jtussing on March 06, 2007, 07:42:56 PM
Thanks, Mica. Confirming everything here except the following:

I assume your do you realize statement applies to the pickup selector switch. I undertand you to be saying that the standard switch has a stand-by: Neck, Both, Bridge, Standby(none).  I was not aware of the (none) setting and find it valuable. Given this, I accept the standard 4-way switch with standby with standard pie-shaped selector so it's not easily confused with something else.

As usual, Alembic experience prevails as it should. :-)

Please confirm my assumption and choice on the pickup selector.

And thanks so much for your help.

- Jim

Also, just a heads up if it's not to late, I'd like a look at the control layout before the holes are drilled.  I'm pretty sure standard layout for the Anniversary elec's will be fine but wanted to take a quick gander.

Thanks!

go for the stand by,its worth it,i love it.  very handy when you want total silence in an instant, and not have to worry about altering your sound. the cool thing about anniversary electronics is that there is no blend it independant volume controls, which i like better. so if you have different volume outputs for your pickups,(which i do lots)and want quiet for a second,(in between songs)without changing your sound at all, just flick back to standby.shhh.switch back again, your there.its beauty really. i love it, it also helps to measure sustain in a quiet room, you can flick it back and forth and listen for  a hum and silence.  these alembics ring forever

Hi Jim,

Yes, I was referring to changing from the standard 4-position switch to a 3-position switch regarding the loss of standby.

You can see the 20th Anniversary electronics routing pattern on the basses in the Showcase section. Here's (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=9205) one that's especially clear. The layout is very similar to a Series I, but without the 5-pin  output of course.

And I have changed the work order back to a standard 4-position rotary switch.

Perfect.  The standard 4-position and the 20th anniversary electronics routing pattern are both fine.

P.S. I assume the LED switch would be an addition.  I'd like it to be above the stereo switch if possible (assuming that the stereo switch is the switch above the jack).  Let me know if that's not possible.

Thanks again!

Post by: mica on March 07, 2007, 06:05:35 PM
The stereo/mono switch is above the jack. An LED operation switch is either located near the stereo/mono like on the  Spyder basses (http://www.alembic.com/info/fc_spyders.html) or it's sometimes cast off in the distance like on this  Brown Bass (http://www3.alembic.com/img/MODBBSB4WalnutL.jpg).

To consider: When the switches are close together, they can be more difficult to operate. Also, you'll want to make sure you really know the layout when performing so you don't accidently go stereo mode when you mean to turn the LEDs on. It just depends on what you'll feel most comfortable operating.

Just let me know your preference and I'll get the instructions marked clearly so that you get exactly what you want.

Spyder bass-esque works for me - very near the stereo switch.  I trust your judgement on exact placement. I'm not worried about operation close together for those two specific switches.

Thanks!

Post by: jtussing on March 03, 2007, 05:19:56 AM
Hi there!  8-string-king just mentioned something I might be interested in. He said there's a cool amber tint that you guys sometimes do on maple tops?  Can I see some examples of that?  I might be interested.

Thanks!

If you have figured maple, I can't see *not* putting a little yellow tint on the instrument-- it really makes the figure pop.

I know there are some examples around here; I'll try to find some later.

If I remember correctly, Oliver's is darker than the minimum, since he was attempting to create a more retro look (like its namesake's instruments).  I believe that you can get a lighter version, I'll have to take a stroll through the FTC threads and find something.

If you check the  Skylark page (http://www.alembic.com/prod/skylark.html), there's a couple of Amber examples, plus an Amberburst. We can add a very small amount of tint to the finish, so it's more like one of the lighter shades in the burst version.

Tinted finishes are a little extra, $250 right now. This is because yours will likely be the only one being painted that color at the time, and each coat will require cleaning the gun and some wasted paint.

Title: (x) Amber Tint?
Post by: mica on March 06, 2007, 06:11:14 PM
Bradley's right, Oliver's was meant to approximate the color the old polyurethane finish reached after about 20 years. Since each instrument is tinted individually, we're going to tint to the customer's request in every case. There really isn't a set standard for colors, more like a general neighborhood.

Never done Zebrawood with amber tint, John. But there are probably several examples of older basses in the Showcase with yellowed finish that should give you an approximation.

I'd prefer to keep the Factory to Customer threads from diverging to customer service for unrelated projects - I might miss something important that way. Mary will email you the tracking number for your shipment.

Title: (x) Setup request
Post by: jtussing on March 02, 2007, 05:06:58 AM
I understand that ordinarily the action is initially set up low and then raised to a more standard height.  I run low to very-low action and prefer not to have the action raised after the initial setup.

Rather than get too specific, it's perfectly fine with me if the setup crew just takes this guidance and does what they think best, but feel free to ask questions if more info would be helpful.

Thanks!
Title: (x) Setup request
Post by: mica on March 06, 2007, 06:18:07 PM
That's fine, I'll ask James to keep the action low. Please note that you'll most certainly need to do a truss rod adjustment when the bass arrives, and probably another one a week or so later to maintain the low action, but it is attainable.
