Wow! I even "caught" Tony carving.

Amazing wood.... wait until I post some with the finish, you will be blown away. (Message edited by mica on February 19, 2004)

Shaun,
Amazing is somehow understating how cool that wood looks! I guess we'll have to start thinking of an Elvish name for this bass now, eh? (Paul, are you listening?)
Ken (TEO)
-
Wow,
the wood is stunning!
It will blow you away with the finish on I think.
Oliver (Spyderman)
-
Wow. Stay tuned to this bass. The wood looks fantastic! I can't wait to see when the paint goes on. Congrats
Bill

Brothet Ken,
I'm in - I'm in - I'm in!!!!!!!
Well ...let's see ?!?!?
I always have found those triplpe omega's with pistolgrip having something ...well ...fantasylike ...elfish ...really.
It very woody because the remarkable wood-patterns. Treebeard would certainly recognize an old friend, maybe once demolished by a typhoon and now giving a new live by the Alembicians.
Take good care of thsi beauty Shaun!

One masterpiece after another! Just when I think they can't get any nicer.....Amazing!

Well, I've finally got here, apparently rather late! All my Alembic club brothers(are there any sisters? Well Mica of course, although she probably ranks higher than sister!) made it to the party before me.....but oh my goodness was it worth the wait!!!!! (I just hope you all saved me a beer...) I really don't know what to say!!!! That wood is just phenomenal!!!!! That BASS is just phenomenal!!! Even at this stage, it is way beyond my wildest expectations!
First of all Mica, I want to say thank you so much for everything so far, you've been incredibly kind and supportive and have managed to put up with my various ramblings (a magical feat in itself); you've made an ageing elf(in my dreams!)incredibly happy!!! And it was nice finally talking to you on the phone (sorry it was so early your time, and I hope that you and your Mom and Dad are on your way back to the best of health!!!)
Secondly, thanks to everyone at Alembic who has been involved in the construction of this bass (Go Tony!!! The Gandalf of carvers!).
And thirdly, thanks to you all, Ken, Oliver, Bill, Paul, Marc and Hollis for your extremely kind comments. Hi Ken! Maybe we better had start thinking of something, although I think you may be better qualified than me judging by your previous suggestions! I'm a little scared I won't do it justice! My girlfriend thinks the wood reminds her of a tiger's pelt in pattern; I seem to see an eagle's wings for some reason (maybe its the shock/joy, or possibly just having seen Return of the King for the 5th time!). Paul, I agree with your comments; in fact I think that's what attracted me to the whole Triple O idea the first time I saw one; it had a kind of fantasy quality to it. I can't imagine Treebeard could have looked for a better reincarnation for a departed friend!
Marc, the wood is superb flame walnut; but it looks to be a singular piece. Once again, Mica takes most of the credit, as it was she who suggested it. I'm so glad I agreed! Phew!!! I'd like to say I'm lost for words, but as you can tell by the length of this post that's not the case! Wow, I need to sit down....oh, I already am!
Just unbelievable.....
All the best
Shaun
-
Another stunning Triple O taking shape! Congratulations, Shaun, nice choice of woods...oh, and get ready, because when you finally hold her in your hands, and strap her on, life will change slightly for you. She will make it easier for you to get up in the morning, but also make it harder for you to get to sleep at night. People will ask about that silly grin on your face during the day. And get ready for the thousands of oohs & aahs, and questions about her. I see that you still have several weeks to go, so prepare!
Best of luck & play in good health.
Chris
-
Many thanks Chris; looks like I'm well on my way to joining you in Triple O ownership. And the sleepless nights and silly grin? I'm already there....
All the best
Shaun
-
Yep ...and Shaun ...you can also get started to think about a new personal quote on your profile, the present one will be obsolete rather soon. BTW, Is that a glimpse of a knobby headstock there??? Good choice man!
-
Hi Paul
Sorry about the delay in replying but I've been rather busy. That is indeed a knobby headstock; I just think it sits so well with the Triple O body shape (but then I would, seeing as the first one I ever say was JPJ's 8 string). Glad you approve!
With regards to editing my profile, well, I don't think I even realised you could (or that anybody could read it!), until reading your post and then looking at the top of the screen, duh! I will check it out and do the necessary asap. Thanks for the advice!
Cheers

Graham is expected to collect your bass early next week, but I know you don't want to wait to see it:
Valentino calles it a Walnut Explosion.
-
Gorgeous!
-
Wow. Love the radiating flames. Congratulations!
Bill
-
Shaun,
Better wear a protective suit with all that 'radiation' and 'explosion'! But seriously, many heartfelt congratulations on your inclusion into the 'Triple O' club! She's a genuine beauty....let us know how she sounds (if you can tear yourself away from her in the first week or two!) Enjoy!!
Chris
-
Well, I'm late again (this whole time difference thing is a real bummer sometimes)!
I have only 1 thing to say: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually that's not quite the only thing I have to say.....that is ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I first came on, about five minutes ago (I've been slack jawed and incapable of typing until now)I nearly screamed the house down! I wasn't really expecting anymore pictures yet, although I knew the bass was imminent.....I just can't believe it.
I've spent over twenty years dreaming about owning a Triple O,and never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd ever get one. I've spent so much time in that time trying to even find decent pictures(mainly of JPJs 8 string); when I discovered the Alembic site, I was ecstatic, and then I saw the Riff King (by the way, which of all you guys owns that?).... I remember sitting in my lunch hour at work staring at that bass thinking how disappointing it was that I would never be able to get one. Finally in October last year I got to the US and saw Ed Roman's featured custom which blew my mind, and when I got back I saw the Triple O in London's Bass Centre (now House of Guitars)and that was it. I'd just hit 40 and figured I owed it to myself. I had to sell some cherished instruments to get this, but now I'm convinced it was all worth it. In fact just the picture makes it all worth while!
Firstly thanks to everyone for their comments. This really is an amazing club; a friend who browsed the Club site said he couldn't believe how nice everybody was! And I couldn't agree more!
Secondly, and even more importantly, I'd like to say thanks to all at Alembic for making my dreams come true in the most spectacular way possible. Mica, Susan, Ron, Tony, Val and everyone else who has been involved in any way, however minor, I can't thank you enough. I just can't wait to get the bass now! I guess when I do I'll have achieved my own personal nirvana.....still got to think of a name though Ken! It'll come to me...when I get her (or is it him?)I will let you all know how she(he?) sounds and feels, providing I can stop drooling long enough to actually play!
Finally, in the words of Homer Simpson, WAHOOOOO!!!!
All the best to everybody
Shaun
ps if none of this makes sense, its not my fault! Just look at that bass!!!!
-
Wow, it's absolutely amazing! That last picture makes the wood look like it's radiating. A very VERY special instrument. Must say I really envy you. Good luck with her!
-
Halleluia what a bass!!!!
These woodradiation is stunning.
We need something elvish for this ...call the tiny people.

Shaun, aren't you a little old to be acting like this?? Get hold of yourself, man. What will the neighbours think? And the relatives? And your fellow Club members? Is this behaviour normal for a distinguished and respected member of your local community???
ABSOLUTELY!!!
Life is short, have fun, nevermind the neighbours.... ;)
-
Neighbours? I've got neighbours? Sorry, all I can think is I've (almost)got an Alembic Triple Omega; I'll just say that again - an Alembic Triple Omega. Oh boy that feels good!
Chris, I don't think I've EVER been called a distinguished and respected member of my local community before(although I've been called plenty of other things), and although I may be 40, my girlfriend would tell you I'm not exactly known for acting my age. Which is exactly how it should be! By the way, did it feel this good when you got your Triple O? (OK, Stupid question - I mean I've seen pictures of it, how could it not???!)
Life is short, have fun....wise words Chris. If only that was compulsory for everyone....
Oh and Paul, the elves are onto it.....
All the best
Shaun
-
Shaun, your fellow club members will think you're acting quite reasonably. That is one awesome bass! Walnut has become one of my favorite woods.
By the way, 40 is still plenty young! Right, Brother Paul?
Sam
-
Oh ...huh ...right Brother Sam,
that youngster is still without hair on his chest LOL
Paul the bad one
-
Not quite over the hill...........but it might not be such a bad idea to check the brakes....
-
Shaun,
Here's an update- Graham was here on Monday saw your instrument before we boxed her up. Wednesday they'll be on a plane headed home to London so, maybe this weekend you'll see her? I'm sure after you recover from the sight we'll be seeing some new posts from you.
-Susan
-
Hi Susan! I hope you are feeling better now.
Many thanks for the update; that's fantastic news!! I can't believe my bass is on the way to England, possibly as I'm typing (in fact it could even be here by now). I just feel somewhat guilty dragging it away from that beautiful California sun.
Oh boy, weekend would be amazing (although Graham has to get it to the House of Guitars - and I know what that jetlag feels like, having made the trip myself fairly recently - and then they have to ship it to me). Talk about anticipation! Just one thing, I've got a feeling it may take me a while to recover from the sight, so I may not be posting immediately (unless I've just GOT to share my elation with the only people who will understand!)
Anyway, until then, best wishes and I can't wait!
Shaun
ps I don't think I've even got brakes anymore...
-
Shaun,
As you can tell by the sparse nature of my posts, once you get it home, there is little that can draw you away from playing it. We will understand if it's a week or two before we hear from you, but be sure to check in periodically so we know you remembered to breathe. :-)
(I'm not kidding, Shaun, really...)
Ken (TEO)
P.S. Brakes are for whimps!!!!
-
By the by, that is a astonishingly beautiful bass. Another masterpiece...breathtaking...Ken's right about that breathing thing.
Ken,
That's what I thought about brakes until I lost them heading north over the Siskiyou mountain pass hauling 80,000 lbs. total gross weight......now......lets just say......I'm perfectly comfortable being whimp-like.
-
Thanks for the compliments guys! I'm currently waiting for a call from the House of Guitars to confirm that my bass has arrived (I'm pretty sure Graham would still be getting over jetlag today so I guess it may be in the next couple of days...)
I think I need a complete chassis overhaul, never mind the brakes. BTW as it's absolutely freezing here at the moment I'm now California dreaming in more ways than one (bass AND weather)! Maybe when my bass arrives I won't notice the cold anymore (note to self, remember to keep breathing...)
All the best guys
Shaun
-
Shaun,
Yeah, it's cold here in California too. Heck, we're going to be back down in the 70's this week!
(Runs for cover...)
:-)
Ken (TEO)
-
Hey Ken, you're down in the 70's? I'm surprised you can type, your fingers must be frozen solid! (and they say that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit...)
I can hardly remember the last time we were IN the 70's...weatherwise of course. The OTHER 70s I remember perfectly well. In fact I spend most of my spare time listening to them, lol
Shaun
-
Shaun, that's degrees fahrenheit and not celsius.
Speaking of sarcasm...
Sam
-
In celsius at 70 degrees Ken'd be bones & vapor... and since I'm only an an hour away from him, I'd be in trouble too.
Valentino
-
Hey Val
(Since we're COMPLETELY off topic now...)
So what would we have to do to make sure our necks are adjusted properly at 70C? (on the Alembics, that is)
(back on topic)
Hey Shaun...how about Taurehuine? (wood of darkness)
Ken (TEO)
-
Ken,
at that temperature (roughly 158 degrees Farenheit) the only thing you can try , is to pray (quickly, before you evaporate).

Asbestos long johns?
-
You mean you don't regularly get those temperatures in California? (sorry, the sarcasm's kicked in again).
Ken, I think I'm going to sit on the name until I get the bass, and I'll see what it inspires. Whilst looking at the pattern on the original piece of wood chosen for the top (241 in the superb walnut woodbank) a friend said it looked to him like an eagle flying through the hands of God, which I thought was pretty incredible (I also saw it as an eagle hovering over a mountain with hills and a valley below). Unfortunately my Elvish doesn't quite run that far, so I've got some reading up to do (and I've still got to get that book)! Not that I've settled on that of course...in fact this could be as tough as deciding the top wood!
BTW, I spoke to James at the Bass Centre on Friday who informed me that both the bass and Graham had arrived back safely, and the bass was in storage (I didn't know they had to quarantine basses!). Apparently I should be receiving it some time towards the end of next week. Graham apparently described the bass as beautiful...
Cheers
Shaun
-
Shaun,
I just had the pleasure of gazing upon the pictures of your new bass and I must say that it is truly a masterpiece. The walnut top is simply stunning and worthy of the Triple O body shape. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
Jeff

Jeff
Many, many thanks for your kind words. Coming from a man who has such an awe-inspiring, mind-boggling instrument on the way, that really does mean a lot! Apparently it arrives at the Bass Centre tomorrow, which means I should have it by the middle of next week at the latest. I have to admit the wait is driving me nuts!
All the best
Shaun
-
My bass arrived Friday! After unpacking the carton, I sat and waited for a couple of minutes before opening the case; after all, I'd waited 20-odd years for this. What if it was a disappointment?
Well, as I opened the case my jaw just dropped. To say it surpasses my wildest expectations is a gross understatement. I cannot believe how incredible that walnut top is; the photos don't begin to do it justice. Its virtually holographic! The depth of figure is unbelievable! And it just plays so amazingly! The only thing is, I haven't been able to plug it in yet.... I keep picking it up and then putting it down again just so I can look at it some more!
I've already spoken to Valentino to express my gratitude to all at Alembic for creating such a masterpiece. So far as I'm concerned, after receiving this, the tagline has to be there can be only one. Utterly without parallel.
Right, I'm off to look at it some more....I may eventually get round to plugging it in as well!
Peace
Shaun
-
Shaun: Its a real charge to hear your reaction to the bass in the pictures - I thought it would be even better in person!! Let us know when you plug it in!!
Enjoy!!!!
Bill
-
Brother Shaun,
Let me explain ...to start playing you need a cord. Oh ...huh ...you only got the bass ...ooooooooooops.
And an amp???
Ooooooooooooooooooops 2
Paul the bad one
Paul the Good one ...would you mind to tell Brother Shaun how he cans use his head as an amp. No ...he lives in UK he cannot lend yours LOL

And unlike many things in life, the feeling that you're experiencing now will not wear off...everytime you see her, or even think about her, a feeling of happiness & well-being will come over you. Sort of an anti-depressant, I guess! (Who needs drugs when you have 'Superb Walnut'!)
Sincere congratulations, Shaun!
Chris
-
Shaun,
What Chris said is absolutely true. I still walk into my studio and just stare at my Rogue for a few minutes before I pick it up. When I play, the sound is always amazing.
Enjoy!
Ken (TEO)

Shaun,
Wonderful bass, I wish I was ballsy enough to sling something like that around my neck.
I do have one question, and I hope I didn't miss this in the thread, but it looks like you have signature electronics and a dummy humcaneller? Is this cosmetic or functional? Either way, it's a nice touch.
Mike
-
Hi guys! Unfortunately an inordinately busy life has kept me away from my new baby for a couple of days, so I still haven't had chance to plug her in. One day this week ...speaking of amps, LOL, I'm not sure my old Trace is gonna bring out the best in it; at some stage I'm going to have to look at another upgrade methinks (oh my aching bank balance!).
I've got to admit, I've taken to having a quick peek at the bass each night as I go to bed. I still don't think its sunk in!
Mike, yep, those are signature electronics with a dummy humcanceller. It is actually a functioning unit, but isn't wired up. Susan was kind enough to allow me to have one fitted for cosmetic purposes (it just completes the look for me; sorry, I'm just fussy about these things!) I will be eternally in her debt....
All the best
Shaun
-
Hi Ken! Wasn't sure whether to go to my thread or yours,LOL, but seeing as its my bass we were talking about, here I am.
That's exactly how I figured it should be pronounced, but as both words are relatively new to me wanted to make sure before I started telling everyboy (I mean, can you imagine naming my own bass in Elvish and then pronouncing it wrong? How much of a dummy would I look? Of course most people wouldn't know the difference anyway, LOL). Anyway, I figure your 2nd opinion is good enough for me! So, Sorne-Raama it is!!!!! Thanks to both you and Sam!
-
Well, actually..ummm(how to put this delicately...) I have a NEW Elven bass under construction!!! (See HERE http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/13286.html?1097276870 (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=7300))
Ken (TEO)
-
Glad to help Shaun. Actually due to you and Ken getting new basses I've been re-reading the LOR triligy. It's been about 30 years and seems I've forgotten a lot of details.
Congratulations on the new bass, Ken. One day I'll be in the custom ranks, hopefully.
Sam
-
Congratulations Ken! What's the spec? I must say I'm not jealous at all.....er, alright, maybe just a little bit. Ok, a heck of a lot ! I'll bet you can't wait! BTW I'm still working my way through all the new threads and postings; I've got a lot of catching up to do.
Sam - good to hear you reread the trilogy. I read it most years in my teens, was sidetracked in my twenties and early thirties and rediscovered it a few years ago (maybe a couple of years before the first film came out); I've read it roughly once a year since. Still can't believe the first time I read it it only took me a week. I was eleven at the time!. That's how much I loved it; and it was a school week too!
Anyway, hope you manage to find your way into the custom ranks sooner rather than later (go on, you know its worth it! )Best of luck!
