Title: Keith's Series I Shorty
Post by: mica on August 26, 2008, 07:57:09 PM
Zipped through to carving so fast, these are the first pics I've captured:

Still have lots of carving to do, but you get the general idea.

They always are- especially with Buckeye.  Every buckeye top I see suddenly becomes my new favorite.

Mica,
Thanks for the pictures. I can't wait it see it with finish. From what I can see the wood fits the characteristics we discussed to a tee.

Keith you lied!! You told me no FTC thread. The Vermillion core looks great with the Buckeye! Looking forwad to seeing some finish on it.

Adam,
No I didn't. I had asked many months ago to not have an FCT but I suspect it was forgotten as this thread popped up after an e-mail status inquiry. No big deal either way. The important thing is I now have pictures to look at. :-)

Keith,
Congratulations on your new addition!  Gorgeous!
Your bass is going to be an absolute beauty to watch transition.  Thanks for sharing.
Of course it will sound incredible with Series I electronics, very nice choices you've made.
Play it Healthy!

It got a little more attention in carving today. Shaped the horns some:

Not pictures of the bass, but of the inlays cut out:
These are barn swallows in flight. They aren't arranged as position markers, but rather to evoke the feeling one gets when these little aerialists are swarming around at dusk like fighter pilots. Here's the general plan:
James even managed to get the shapes of the flight feathers cut. I just love these birds!

Mica,
Thanks for the update. I can hardly wait to see and play it. My original inspiration for this was the chimney swifts that fly around my house in the summer and the swallows that surrounded the intersections on cool mornings when I lived in Colorado. I think is going capture that quite well.

Yippee! Now the interminable wait for UPS to deliver it.

Yes I see the round pickup selector. Should mean no more banged up fingers when I get a little over exuberant with my slapping.

Thanks for the congrats and compliments folks.

I just noticed the wood patterns by the neck pickup and between the bridge and tailpiece almost look like deliberate design choices rather than pure serendipity. Beautiful!

And starting to get dropped in place:
Actually, they are all in now, but I wasn't fast enough with the camera - the fingerboard is all covered with tape and the bass is back in spray for the last few coats of finish.

No problem on missing the completed inlays. It will just be that much more of surprise seeing it all together.  I guess this means we are in the final stretch with the inlays being complete and the finish being finished.
