Here's a rather dark AND flamey piece of Walnut for your Distillate (it will look darker yet with finish on it):

The bottom even follows the flat center and curved sides of the Distillate shape. I hope you like this piece, I think it will look great!
-
Wow...
-
Here's the other piece you were considering for comparison:

This piece will finish a little lighter that the previous piece.
-
This new darker flamey walnut piece looks perfect!
Thanks Mica!
-
Glad you like the Walnut - that piece is gonna look so good when the finish hits it.
Was the initial sketch of the front inlay on the right track? I'd like to get the final version completed as soon as possible.
-
Yes Mica, the front Inlay looked very cool!
My only concern with the sketch was that the walnut did not come close enough to the pickups and the bridge (rear of bass).
-
I'll get to work on the refined drawing. I can get the inlay about 3/16 closer to the pickups without much trouble. I'll be sure to include the tailpiece on the next drawing - the one I sent you only had the bridgeblock.
-
Here's the next sketch:

The dotted line around the bottom and sides represents where the flat part of the top stops and the roundover begins. The inlay can't extend into that area at all.
My mom noticed the bass you were inspired by had the front inlay under the tailpiece. I think we should steer around the tailpiece so it matches the rest of the inlay around the pickups. She also noted that the part where the inlay gets close to the pickups looked too close in real life - that little picture is flattering.
Kris insists on binding from the get go - purpleheart will look great.
Do you want the inlay on the upper horn to extend longer than it is?
-
This looks great, Mica! The inlay on the upper horn I think looks great the way it is. This is exactly how I pictured it! I also definitely will take your Mom's advise (Mom's know best)!
Thanks.

Mica,
Is it possible to make the neck of this bass
1.56 (at nut) and 2.34 (24th fret)?
I want it to feel like my other basses but with a skinnier neck at the 24th fret (one of my basses has 1.6, 2.4 and the other is 1.56, 2.45). On the standard alembic narrow neck, I love the 2.25 (24th fret), but the 1.75 at nut is a little uncomfortable for me. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
-
That's fine, Adam. I'll adjust the order to reflect the neck dimensions you prefer.
As more interesting things start happening I'll add some in progress shots to this thread to mak ethe waiting a little less painful.
-
Hi Mica.
Hope you are well. I was just wondering if you could post any kind of in-progress pic for me? The suspense is killing me!!!
Thank you.
Adam

Here's the body shaped:

EVERYONE here was crazy about it. There were two customers in our showroom today and when Kris brought up your body, they were blown away. The other cool thing is that Kris was able to do it without the binding. It's so clean a cool. Thanks for having us build this, it's just AWESOME! Should be in spray by then end of next week.
-
It looks great, Mica!
Exactly how I pictured it in my head.
I sent you an email regarding the neck.
Wow, I can't wait until it is done!
-
Well, here is what Kris came up with for your neck:

I think it will look great with the body. Gimme the go-ahead and we'll get it glued up and in spray in no time.
-
I should mention the laminates are:
Walnut
Maple
Purpleheart
Maple veneer
Purpleheart
Maple
Walnut
-
Yes. I think this lamination will look great!
Let's go with it.
Thank you!
-
Hi,
I'm just peeping in to congratulate you all. This design is stunning and great!
I'm as expecting as you Adam. I can imagine you sitting on the edge of your stool every night watching the progress on the club.

Many visitors have fallen in love with this bass. I'm sure it will inspire other interesting projects.

I like that a LOT....Michael
-
Even though there are a load of unbelievably great basses on this site I can say that this one is the one I like best so far; I always loved the Distillate shape and this manages to makes it look even better .Great inspiration for my next one...congratulations Adam

We got an unexpected load of cases in today (expected, but we didn't think until Wednesday!), and sorting through the delivery we did not get this bass packed up today. It's leaving tomorrow, so you've got a small chance to see it if you want to, Valentino. If you can brave the rain we've been having, come on up tomorrow AM.
-
Very very nice!
-
Thanks everybody!
I can't wait to get my hands on it!
-
Adam,
That is a truly sweet bass. I'm a symmetry nut and can really appreciate the walnut top halves framing the contour around the pick-ups and bridge. Very nice.
