Title: Rogue for Graeme
Post by: mica on December 08, 2004, 07:37:12 PM
Hi Graeme.  There's not much to look at yet, but here's where you'll get to see the whole thing take form. Here's the very first part of your bass:

Jim.
As you can see from the title change, I'm getting a rogue - 5 string fretless with coco bolo top laminate and purpleheart neck laminates.

Cool, it's definitly sounding like a CocoBolo christmas over at Alembic.  I think I must be the only person getting a bass done that isn't going to be CB.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked the top, it's really unusual, and dynamic. Bob was happy you shared his taste.

WOW!!!!  What an absolutely gorgeous piece of cocobolo!

Mica and/or Val:

Is there anymore like this?  I'd be very interested in a piece like this for the back of my custom Further.

One with the clamps in action:

And that top is under the gluing caul:

Bill, we've always got weird wood around. Of course, no two pieces are ever the same, but I bet we've got something that has a similar "spirit" as this one. When are you going to be in Santa Rosa next?

Mica or Val, What a great piece of Coco! Is that picture oddly exposed or am I seeing lots of yellow in the grain? From past experience, what will the color of this board end up like after you shoot the finish? Will it be more toward the reddish-orange end of the spectrum? It seems like cocobolo changes color so much every time  a picture is posted on the same project that it becomes difficult to make a decision based on what I see. One that comes to mind is Rory's cocobolo bass in that the first posting of the raw piece the wood appears dark  brown yet when finished a beautiful deep reddish tone surfaces. I find that facinating but difficult to predict. I leave it in your expert hands. Mike

Mica is not here today; she will be in and out for the next few days because she is moving house; she just finished working on the featured custom yesterday. Hopefully she'll have time for some updates next week.

Just starting to get a little caught up here, but there's always so much to do, but that's a good problem to have.  Here's a couple of shots from  last week in the finish department:

That wood really "popped" out with the finish.

Now you HAVE to admit that the shape of the peghead REALLY matches the body.
NICE bass!!!

oooooh, what can I say. I've just sat and looked at this for about ten minutes. That wood certainly is fantastic and PTBO, you're right about the peghead. That's why I chose it although I still think my epic looks right with the cone ;-)
My boss is wondering if I'm going to do any work today.  With this to stare at?  He must be joking. Thanks Mica, you've certainly brightened up my day.

jeff, it must be about 5 am where you are. Why aren't you asleep ;-)
Graham at bassworld was convinced he'd be able to collect it at NAMM on the 20th. I didn't think it was likely at first but you never know, Hope springs eternal..

Jeff, it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock & roll, but luckily in this race the winner AND the loser takes it all LOL!

Beautiful Rogue, Graeme! That wood 'popped out' great, I love it when Coco Bolo is as clearly grained as that.

Truly the birth of a classic beauty...

Now that looks absolutely fantastic. The Coco Bolo has turned out just how I wanted and I love the lighter coloured mahogany, reminds me of honey Thanks ever so much Mica, you've certainly made my day. Only another couple of weeks and I'll be holding this beauty. Can hardly wait.

This beautiful piece of coco bolo appears to be melting.  I also love the contrast between the darker and lighter sections of the wood.  A very attractive bass overall.  Congratulations Graeme.

I like the contrast too; and I thought it was something other than mahogany.

I'd assumed it was mahogany as i didn't specify anything different but it is alot lighter than the body of my epic.

Perhaps Mica can confirm.

She's arrived! Words can't express the joy I'm feeling right now. As good as Mica's pictures are, they can't compare to the real thing. in the scottish sunlight this afternoon, the cocobolo is glowing. I've tried taking some photos with my daughters digital but it's not very high quality so i'll get some on my 'real' camera and try to get them posted next week.
