Title: Single-Cut Alembic??
Post by: darkstar01 on March 14, 2006, 02:04:48 PM
Alright, so I know that having a classico in production should probably keep me from thinking about more basses.. but oh well. I've been thinking about how a single-cut on a Small standard body would look. Has Alembic ever made a single cut bass? or guitar for that matter. Just curious.

Yes - there was one on eBay recently.  It was a long scale single cut that clearly appeared to be made by Alembic, though it may have been an employee project rather than a full production bass.  You may be able to locate a pic if you poke around the seen on eBay board, it was within the past month.

I suspect that it would balance well in short scale, but probably not so well for anything longer.  It is certainly a proven shape for a guitar body.

And then of course there was the Peanut (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=15162), which had no cuts!

Thanks, Michael!
I was sitting at work reading this thread and thinking I'm sure there was a discussion of Dave Torbert's Alembic somewhere. All I could do was a quick check of Artists & Their Alembics, without success.

Yes, that looks like a pretty nice design too!

Hope you like short scales - I don't think it would balance well in medium or long.

I'm sure you're right, Mica, about the balance issue for that design, but what if a balance K was rounded over?

That would likely have good balance, and would satisfy a certain aesthetic.

The thing that gives those shapes balance is the position of the strap peg versus the fretboard.  The balance K puts that strap peg somewhere around the 14th fret, I believe.  Anything you turn into a traditional singlecut is going to hurt the balance.  Now, if you're talking about one of those modern singlecuts, like a Benevente, that would probably balance okay.  They look awfully heavy to me because of all that extra wood, but I've never held one.

My Benavente weighs only 4,5 kg and the balance is great. Beautiful and very slim body design.

I've held a singlecut Sei bass and it weighed less than 9 lbs I'd say.
