I am trying to find out about these pickups from Alembic. They are supposedly wide aperture single coils. But I can't find out much more, particularly tone. Most non series pickups I find are AXYs or MXYs. I think that the Fatboys would be somewhere in between. Is this right? Does anyone have them?

Hi Daniel,
Fatboy pickups are not single coil, they're hum cancelling like AXY/MXY but use a magnet the same size (larger) as the series pickups. AXY and MXY both use a smaller magnet, but the AXY is in a casing similarly sized to a seies pickup. The fatboys give more lowend response based on seeing more string length, most club members find them sucessful in the bridge position or on single pickup Excels, etc.

Compared to an AXY/MXY, the Fatboy has a low-end bump, and the high-end is a bit less sparkly.

Very Interesting. Are they only available in the bridge position? I think that the wood cut for Fatboys would be same as Series, right? So to upgrade later (as in a bass built 'prepped for series') would require less recutting, is that a fair assumption? I would like the added low end, I don't see them specifically on the generator would the cost more than the AXYs or MXYs?

I hope this isn't one of those worn out topics, but I couldn't find any older threads that discussed this.

Try using this Google search for the Alembic site and Club (http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:alembic.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all target=_blank).
There have been a number of discussions recently where Fatboys came up, but the thread title doesn't necessarily include the word Fatboy.

All my 4 Excel 5's have dual Fatboys. You can combine them with AXY MXY. The beauty of Alembic is they will do anything that is in the realm of possibility. The 10 string Excel they will be building for me will have dual Fatboys and Europa electronics. Trip Wamsley has an Epic with 3 pups 2 MXY (thinner) and what appears to be a Fatboy or Axy in da middle. photo here:

If you haven't run across it yet, there is a review of pickups here (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=293) in the Must Reads section of the board.

If I remember correctly, I believe Mica told me once that if there's a mold for a particular size or shape already, they'll pour it around whatever Alembic pickup you choose. Also, if you have an odd-sized or shaped pickup you want replaced with an Alembic pickup that correctly fills the hole, they'll do that as well but you will need to pay for the creation of the mold.

I noticed on the website that the price of pickups for AXYs/MXYs include the filters, there is no price that I see for Fatboys. If I ordered them would also need to buy new filters, harness, etc., or would I only need the pickups themselves and use the rest of the electronics in place? Thanks.

Just the pickups.
