Hi, I bought this bass on ebay a few weeks ago. Its a 1976 Series 1.  Any info you have would be great. Thanks.

Here's what's in the instrument file:
 
top: Birch
body: Birch
back: Birch
neck: Maple and Walnut 34 scale
fingerboard: Partridgewood (aka Granadillo) with mother of pearl inlays
peghead veneers: Walnut
originally made for: Rothschild (our distributor at the time)
borthday: December 20, 1976
 
From what I could tell, we haven't heard from this bass since the day we shipped it.

Thanks a lot.  That doesn't seem totally correct though.  The back wood is not the same as the top.  I have pictures of it in the showcase forum.  The thread is called My 1976 Series 1.

Yeah, I see what you mean. If I were guessing about the woods on your bass, (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=8468) I would say the top looks like Purpleheart under the yellowed finish. The back does look like Birch typical of the time. I'll look at the card again tomorrow and see if misread something or if there is a possible duplicate serial number.

I guess the record may be incorrect, because I reported exactly what it said.  
 
We're all used to wood like Red Oak that always seems to look the same, but most other woods are not like this. I suppose it's possible that the top of your bass is Birch, but from a photo, it doesn't look like it. But you never know, at least until you examine a chunk of it under a microscope, and that's really not an option here.
 
I'm adding a note in the file that the original card might be incorrect. If we ever see this bass in person, we might be able to take an even better guess, for now, it's a little mystery.
