Hi Mica, I just bought a used brown bass to replace a '77 short scale that I bought new from Fullerton Music in '77 and sold in '93.  The brown bass is scheduled to show up on my doorstep tomorrow. I'd really apprciate any information you could offer. I've attached a picture of the bb and also one of me back in the day with my shedua topped, short scale '77--I don't recall ever calling it a "series I" back then.  --John

Hi John, congrates on the new aquisition.  I have never played one of those, I play a Spoiler, is there a lot of difference?

I don't know about the spoiler, but, I can tell you there is a lot of difference for me between the two 34 Alembics I own (MK and Orion) and the short scale. What the short scale excels at is the feeling that you can reach/play anything. You just want to move into any register FAST. Multiple stops are a breeze. What I can't do well on the short scale is slap. There isn't enough room to really wail--that's where the extra room in the long scales really helps. That being said, this bass is really alive with round-wound strings and tapping/strumming/harmonics are a pleasure. Hope that helps. --John

I just noticed that the bird tailpiece is actually two pieces. Is the lower part graphite? When did you start using that? Thanks.

The early ones used a tailpiece that was ebony on the bottom and brass on the top.  My '76 Series one guitar (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=8376) has one.  Scroll down to the second to last picture.

The Ebony shim tailpiece is a nod to the early builds where the brass part wasn't machined (though these are machined).
