Hi.  What sort of beast is this?  I got this a few years ago in a trade and was told that it was a prototype alembic guitar.  I don't play it very much and was thinking of selling it but don't know exactly how to describe it other than it was made in 1981.  Also, any idea what I should ask for it?  Thanks

Hi iggy,
It's a Nice top wood flatsawn Zebrawood!

Your Distillate guitar is not prototype.
One PU and Brass top plate are well known Japanese version. (Of course, It's Made in USA)
I have never seen the S/N over 300.
I think it is one of the last 1PU Distilate.

Nice guitar!  Looks like it's in good shape.  As Eiji said, it's a Distillate guitar; and as he also said, this particular version with the single pickup and top mount control cavity cover was made for export to Japan.

These don't trade often enough to have an established market value.  And your location can have an effect on the market value.  You may want to consider listing this in our section and seeing what kind of response you get.

Hi Iggy,

Eiji has correctly described this guitar for you. We did not usually keep records of these individually since they were all the same specifications.

Good luck with the auction - it's looks in fine condition from the photos.
