Wow, you've been waiting! At least I did locate your file and found something for you to learn:
 
HLB4 Elan 4-string bass
top: Figured Walnut
accent: none recorded (and probably none there)
body: Maple
neck: 3-piece Maple
scale: 34 (long)
fingerboard: Ebony
inlays: Pearloid (plastic) ovals
pickups: Alembic PJZ
controls: I'm a little confused on this one. It says AE-1, Q, pan which has the same controls and an Elan, but it's not actually the same circuit. If you post an image of the electronics cavity, I can resolve this ambiguity.

Requested cavity picture below ;) When I purchased the bass the previous owner said that Alembic had sent a replacement for the Pan potentiometer (marked 475-024).  The bass sounds great and the controls work perfectly!

It appears to have a full-on set of Elan electronics, so I'm not sure about that ambiguity in the records, but I've made an entry to clarify it. Thanks!

Art, I have an 89' with the same electronics.  
Have you even noticed a difference in the output of the neck and bridge pickup when the pots are both fully open and the pan is centered? My neck pick-up seems to be drastically lower.  
I don't know if this is normal or if it is a problem with p/u or circuit.

There should be difference in volume when both trimmers are full up due to the physical location of the pickups, but generally it's the treble (bridge) pickup that has the lower output.  
 
If your neck pickup height is very low, it could account for some of the difference.  
 
The picture in this post for the Europa has the same trim pot positions as the Elan:

If you reverse where the pickups are plugged in, you can determine if there is a problem with a pickup or the circuit, or it may reveal no problem.
