Just purchased my first Series I (1982) and would be interested to know what info is available about it. It has recent PUs but the previous owner, who indicated it has bubinga lams, was not sure if it received a full electronics upgrade.
Photos will be forthcoming in showcase section whenever we have a sunny day in Minneapolis and I can get some decent shots. The outdoor photos that others have done so nicely will need to wait for awhile as the high temp in my neck of the woods is supposed to be 3 degrees F or -16 C tomorrow.

Giving the instrument a thorough cleaning at the moment. What was the material the fret markers were made of in these instruments. They are so dirty that you really can't see them and Flitz doesn't seem to be working very well.

I'm assuming you mean the side fret markers on the top edge of the fretboard. I have a 1980 series I bass and I think they are most likely to be made of brass. Mine were a bit grubby when i got my bass so I just used a small jewellers screwdriver to scrape the grunge out and get them shiny again. I also had to do the same on both edges of the frets which were slightly green.

Flitz on a Q-Tip ! I have been able to make all of mine look like new . I little tiny dab of Flitz on a Q-Tip and wammo -motion and pressure . Amazing !

Tried the Flitz on a q-tip first thing and it had absolutely no impact. These side fret markers are both very small and VERY gunked up. I was trying to avoid the scraping but that might be needed.

Mine were gunked up as well . Perhaps a little gentle work with a tooth pick first . If that does not work try a tiny jewelers screw driver as suggested by jazzyvee in his post # #4558 above .If you have a pick tool as used by dental hygienist that might work with a careful steady hand technique not to damage any wood surfaces at all . Next ; finish and shine with Fliz on a Q-Tip .

Side dots are either silver or bronze from that time. The finish may or may not be on the side of the fingerboard, so inspect for that detail carefully.
If there is no finish on the side of the fingerboard, I'd suggest using fine white Scotch-Brite and lemon oil or lightly sanding (taking care to avoid the finish on the back of the neck).
If there is finish on the side of the fingerboard, then you should make some other marking there, like white enamel (nail polish is good) or small stickers.
