Can the Spoiler electrics from the early to mid '80s handle being run on two batteries? Anyone tried it?

I do not know specifically about this circuit but in general doubling the voltage will increase the current to a level that can damage the circuit components.
You could wind up with a really smokin' guitar.
The best people to answer this question would be the Alembic technicians.

That was my question- can the circuit handle it? Most onboard preamps these days can, I was wondering if the Alembics could.

If you're clipping and need more headroom, then you can have the circuit modified slightly to handle the increased voltage. If you're not clipping, you probably can stick with 9V.  
 
If you want it to be louder, make sure you increase the gain with the internal trimpots before going through the trouble of modifications.

Thanks Mica. I'm not really clipping, but I can sorta tell its' gettinga teeny biot close to the line sometimes, especially with new strings.
