I have a 1976 Series 1 that I don't think has had The Upgrade. I don't really have any trouble with RF frequencies, but I do have some problem with noise from stage lights. I noticed that the bass doesn't have a ferrite bead. Would adding one help? I don't know if the series single coil pickups work the same as the other humcancelling pickups, since it uses the humcancelling adjustments on the control plate. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm no electronics expert, and I have trouble remembering things; but I don't think Series instruments have had ferrite beads. Hopefully, someone else will have more valuable input.

The single coils depend on the dummy pickup for the humcancelling. The two inner control screws that peek through the backplate adjust the humcancelling 'level' per pickup, and you can fiddle around with these until you get the best results.
If you still cannot eliminate the noise, it probably does need The Upgrade - I'm sure if adding (cheap) ferrite beads would already solve the issue, they wouldn't suggest the (expensive) upgrade.

adriaan- So you're saying that radio frequency noise and 60 cycle hum are the same thing?

Depends on the scale of things. ;-)
If I'm not misinformed, the principle of humcancelling can be applied to both.

Never mind. I moved the DS5 from the top of my amp to the floor and the noise went away. Whisper quiet. I'm an idiot.

It's always nice to hear that a problem has been resolved!
