Title: SC - Intonation up the neck...
Post by: nipperooney on September 30, 2007, 12:48:22 PM
I've noticed when playing up the dusty end on my Stanley Clarke Sig that the tuning is flatter the higher up the neck I go. A typical example is in Free's Alright Now, with the little bass riff that starts the guitar solo - I'm sure many of you will know the one...

Well, when I go to play the four crotchets in the 2nd bar of the bass riff way up the neck, I find that I'm having to bend the notes to keep them in tune. Surely this can't be right, can it? I've noticed them to be out of tune aurally, but as a check I put my tuner on as I played up there and they are definately flat. Help!!

As referenced in the Must Reads section of the board, there is a thread on setting intonation here (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=3160).  Scroll down to Bob's post #493.  Hope that helps.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the section, there is a lot of useful information there.  And the FAQ (http://club.alembic.com/Images/16271/16280.html?1182378055) section has a lot of useful info as well.

Thanks Guys. I did do a search for intonation and it came up with nothing, hence my post. I shall read and digest!

Joey's setup thread and the Bob's post on intonation are good for any bass or guitar, too.  Once you've spent some time poking around this site, you'll be amazed at the collection of knowledge posted here!

I used to be afraid to adjust truss rods and thought that adjusting intonation was beyond my abilities, but after watching it done a couple times and reading stuff like Dave linked to, I discovered that it's not that mysterious after all!

Now if only I had asked my dad to teach me how to solder...

hieronymous - soldering an't that hard, good iron, quality solder and patience & practice.
Don't blow on the joints  to cool them, this causes oxidation and dry joints!

I've never been able to solder.  I'm thinking it might be because I lacked a good iron, quality solder, patience and practice.

Well Dave you've never impressed me as someone who lacks patience. You have always seemed to have plenty watching over this zoo. ;-)
