Title: 1983 Spoiler volume pot question

The volume control on my beloved '83 Spoiler has Always been a bit problematic... Very loose and if its fully open it sometimes cuts the signal completely when you touch it...  Can I replace it with a newer one? I have some spares, but will have to widen the hole in the body.  This is the old one:

  If it can be done: The new ones have two "legs" that also are soldered to the board, the original doesn't have those. I assume these can be clipped? (they're only there to provide extra strength?)

Just checked the spare parts drawer - I have one of the old type, but it rotates freely.

Just turned off the soldering iron, glad to report full control of volume is regained :-)
