The following was posted in the Alembic article on  wikipedia as an exception to Alembic's no freebies policy. Could someone from Santa Rosa advise its correctness?
 
Alembic also approached Mark King at a gig on the Stevie Winwood tour in 1986 with an offer to build him a bass. Mark received two 34 scale Series 2 basses initially and then ordered two more in identical woods with 32 scale.

Thanks - the site has lots of fascinating information - but doesn't indicate whether some of MK's basses were gratis, which is the background to the comment on Wikipedia.

Also the idea of Alembic (who exactly?) approaching players at gigs in 1986 seems a bit strange.

I remember Mark King saying in an interview that he was approached by someone from Alembic
with a view to them building a bass for him.
It did give the persons name and the wording suggested that it was given to him.
I've probably still got the magazine (I've got hundreds dating back to 1982) so I'll dig it out over the weekend and see.

I think it makes sense, given that they named a Signature model after him, that Alembic did talk to Mark in 1986 about specs for the Signature bass.  But Alembic also has a Stanley Clarke Signature bass, and until this past year they had never actually GIVEN him a bass.  I would not find it hard to believe that Alembic may have consulted Mark King about a Signature bass specs without actually giving him a bass.

I do remember Mark King saying; They(alembic) showed me some gorgeous pieces of wood and asked if they could build him a bass.  
This was around the time the 'it's over' video came out, that's  were he first appeared with an Alembic.

here is one for you all..I have the original interview from Guitarist magazine(I am from UK) and he also states that the hum canceller doesn't do anything to quote ' It's as noisy as everything else I have used'.
Alembics noisy..I don't think so unless someone has fiddled with the trim pots inside!!
