The bass player in my band is looking for a case for his Epic 5. Any suggestions on a good solid case that fits and isn't too expensive?

ProTec. Relatively cheap, durable, and protective.

Hi Bill,
I second Bradley. This is what I have (personal testimony) and it works just fine. A bassist friend of mine admires it and will likely get one to replace his 'gig bag' for his Yamaha fiver. About a hundred bucks I believe it was and well worth it.

Hi Bill.
I'm using a Hiscox for mine. Never had a problem with it.

I have a Peavey case; kind of a pseudo flight case, a little more heavy duty than a regular case, and it's perfect. And when carrying my most prized possession around the streets of NYC it's a little comforting to know anyone who knows a little about instruments might assume I'm carrying some generic piece as it says Pe (no offense to Peavey fans)

I got a Coffin case from Guitar Center for under $100 bucks. It's solid, looks real cool, and is as unique as my Epic. Besides, their website is pretty bizarre if you're into Goth.
Here's a link to the case:

Same. The Coffin fits my Epic 6 like a custom case.
