Title: Weight of SC Std in Vermilion
Post by: lidon2001 on April 20, 2005, 06:06:24 PM
What would one expect the weight to be of a SC Std with Vermilion top, back, and body?

Thanks,

Tom

The one I picked up felt like it was made of marble, but I only played it about 15 minutes a year ago, so I can't give you a more accurate answer.  I suppose the short answer is that it was heavier than I expected, sort of reminded me of wearing a Les Paul.

Thank you very much for your insightful comments.  I look forward to hearing from Susan and finalizing the details of my order.

ygg, or others in the know

I just scrolled down further to see the strap placement issue.  Do you find that's where the strap button should be?   Top heavy, for me, is unacceptable, and might sway me to a short scale Balance K (here we go again Susan!).

Thanks,

Tom

Nevermind, I'll deal with it.  I just spoke with my dealer, Uncle Bob's, and the order has gone through.  You're ok Susan!  Now, patience....

Peace,

Tom

A couple things for you to consider:

There are variations of the crown headstock available.  You might ask about the smallest/lightest of them to avoid top-heavy, if that is really a concern.

The body should be pretty heavy, particularly if you go for a solid core.  Additionally, the bridge block will add weight if you specified one of those.  I'm not sure what else can be done naturally to adjust the balance of the bass.

If you're looking for a lighter body, ask about hollowing it out.  Too light there might get you a head-heavy bass, though.

Most important of all, trust to the experience of the builders once you explain what you're looking for.  This is probably one of those times in life where you're better off to describe your wishes and allow them to tweak the specs to meet them.

My first iteration of this bass included a knobless knobby for that reason.  I'll have to speak with them.

Thanks,
