I know you guys are busy, BUT, when you get a chance could I get a build record on my recenlty acquired, and registered, Epic 6, 94W8770...Just wondering, can you tell how close his was to being the first Epic 6 made?
-
Well, I don't have the full factory records, but out of my database of 627 instruments, the earliest Epic I've found is 93W7806, which was born sometime around July 1, 1993. I don't know how many strings that one had, though.
The earliest 6-string I have listed is 94W8559, born on 9/2/94.
I don't have the specs for yours, but it probably born in mid-December, 1993. (93W8773, also a 6-sting Epic, was born on 12/19/93.)

Nic, are you sure about the 93W8773 number? My Epic is 94W8181. Shouldn't a '93 have a lower number behind the W?

The records are kept in good old-fashioned file folers in real-life metal file cabinets. We just keep an individual record for each bass, guitar or other instrument with some amount of build detail. The amount of detail is greater on newer records compared to the earliest ones.
Someday, when I get the time, these records will be converted to electronic format, then I'll be able to answer queries like this.

And the build record for 94W8770 shows:
top: Quilted Maple
accent: Purpleheart
body: Mahogany
neck: 5-piece Maple (no veneers)
fingerboard: Ebony
pickups: MXY56
controls: volume, pan, bass, treble
output: 1/4 mono
originally sold to: Washington Music Center
birthday: exact birthday not recorded, but the bass exited the finish department on December 13, 1994.
During this period, we made many 6-string Epics for Washington Music. I know we made them as early as 1993 (I have a Zebrawood one here that was a salesman's sample at the time).

8773 is mine, and it is 94W8773.

Oops. Sorry 'bout that. Yes, my database shows 8773 as a '94, as DW confirms. My goof.
Btw., I'm not tracking owners in my database. Privacy issues. None of my business _who_ owns which specific instruments.
Mica - I figured 8770 and 8773 might have been part of a run of 6-strings. :-)

Thanks for the help. The response, family atmosphere of this club/company are among the reasons I wanted an Alembic so badly. Not to mention now that I have played it, especially with other pickers, I realize that these instruments do live up to their great rep! I do hope to have one custom made especially for me one day,,,hopefully soon...thanks again.

If I weren't just a junior member, I'd give you the official welcome to the club/family. Oh, well, I guess I can't be that far away from being a real member. Welcome!!! And, let us know what else you need.

David, welcome to the club and good luck to you in finding the right Alembic for you.
DW, you certainly can give an official welcome to the club. You are just as real a member as anyone else.
