Hello again... there is a Tribute Spider on eBay from Ed Roman Guitars. There seems to be a big interest in Spiders on this forum so I figured I would post it... enjoy. Frank

There are a couple of things wrong with the ad on Ebay. It states there are brass spider web inlays - the Spyders use sterling silver inlays (they look like brass because they tarnish over time under the finish). It also says it has fingerboard LEDs - Spyders have side LEDs in red (surrounded by sterling silver). Just thought I'd set the record straight.

...and now Ed Roman has a Triple Omega Series II at $17,500 to start. It's a monster bass, but I wouldn't think of it as the type of thing to be sold on eBay by a dealer.
I followed his other links related to the Spyder bass and he seemed interested in tooting his horn, associating himself closely with JE, and promoting his own bass-building skills more than singing the praises of the Spyder. Business is business, but somehow I am not impressed.

I'm checking his website regularly (for laughs and some pretty pictures). Ed Roman certainly isn't the kind of guy I would do business with. Also I find it somewhat disrespectful of him to offer that Triple O via eBay, but that's just my personal feeling I guess... (I can't really explain this)

Ed has great pictures!! I've gotten more screensavers off his site. But I think his pricing is suspect. The Triple O bsee mentioned at a starting bid of $17,500 comes off the Custom Quote Generator with a retail price of just over $18,000 (for those reading the thread in Swap Shop that I started about this, I forgot the cost of the included case). However, if the bass appears to have been on Ed's site since last fall, wouldn't that suggest it had been ordered before the price increase in April, '03? If so, the original retail would be even lower. Hmmm...
I think it's kind of bizarre to offer a bass like this on Ebay. It's definitely bizarre to offer it at a high price when the only people who'd be likely to buy it there would be us in this Club!! Ironically, because of what I could find out about the bass through the Club and Alembic, I would not be overly concerned about any quality issues with the instrument. There's already a first hand review by someone who has played it at length on another thread. The twist is that anyone with access to all that info must also have access to an accurate list price!!
Huh?!?
I guess I'm ranting and then publishing it on the web. Sounds sort of like...

Having recently caught my foot in my mouth while ranting, I've sworn off ranting, signed the pledge, I'm on the wagon...for now.

If anyone's interested in a Spyder, Beaver Felton at Bass Central will be getting another one in shortly. If you can wait, it's better than paying these inflated prices.
Everyone seems to have sketchy opinions of this Ed Roman, but Beaver and his staff are totally cool and will cut you a no-BS deal.
The guy selling the Series I (phantom Series II) Exploiter e-mailed me to say the high bidder on that bass backed out. I already bought the Spyder from Beaver. So if anyone's interested, I think the seller learned his lesson now....
