Title: ContraNate
Post by: contranate on September 29, 2025, 05:15:39 PM
Hello everyone!

I'm from Palmdale, CA. I just sold my first and only Alembic bass, a 1984 Spoiler 4-string.  I play mostly 5-strings, so I've decided to sell the Spoiler and use the money to maybe try and buy a 5-string Alembic with wider string spacing (hopefully even fretless) in the future.

I grew up in the punk scene in my town and played bass/sang/song-wrote in several bands. I eventually started a small record label and studio that ran for about 20 years.  I taught commercial music at the local community college here (Rock Band class and Live Sound Reinforcement, etc.).

I'm not in any bands at the moment, but I'm thinking I might get back to recording some small things I've written in the near future.

Nice to meet y'all!

Well howdy Nate and welcome to the club!  Lots of knowledgeable and nice people around here.  Good luck on your search for a fiver.

Hi Nate, welcome to the camp!
Contrabassoon, Contranate…. This is getting to be fun.

Was the Spoiler used on WEFEW?   The bass comes through the mix really nicely.
You need another Alembic for sure.  :D

Trepidatious to say this, but listening to the first part of Dirt immediately made me think Minutemen.   8)

@pauldo

Thanks for taking the time to check out the music!

That was a Warwick Corvette on there, it was recorded in the B.A. period of my life (Before Alembic).

Hopefully you can see why once I played an Alembic I fell in love!  It achieved the tone I was attempting to get with the Warwick - but did it SO much better!

I love the Minutemen!

Happy to hear about your affinity for Watt, D. Boone and Hurley - that was intended to be a compliment!

Yes Alembics are the cat’s pajamas, that Warwick sounded good.

5 strings pop up there and some sellers give “Club Discounts”.
