Title: You don't say?
Post by: cozmik_cowboy on September 19, 2025, 08:57:50 PM
Dr. Henry Van Dyke, addressing the National Education Association, Feb. 1921:

"Jazz music was invented by demons for the torture of imbeciles.  The State has the same right to protect its citizens from deadly art as it has to prohibit the carrying of deadly weapons, but I do not think law can reach the matter.  It is spiritual.

Setting aside any Constitutional argument one might pose to the good Doctor as pertains to his statement, I just think that is freaking hilarious.
Especially since, as clearly it seems to have been torturing him, what does make ol' Hank his own self?

According to Frank Zappa, "Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny".

that quote should be on every jazz album, or at least on a t-shirt...
