Title: Side dot markers on fretless basses
Post by: lowlife on July 05, 2004, 07:59:53 AM
I know that like most basses, my fretted Excel has the side dot markers always positioned in the middle of two frets (between 2/3, 4/5, etc).
On a fretless, would the dot markers be in the identical position, or are they offset and positioned where the fret bars would actually be.

It has always been my experience that the dot markers on a fretless represent where the fret would actually be.

I guess that's true in most cases. But I've also seen fretless basses with a marker for each fret and the side dots in the 'regular' positions. If you order a fretless Alembic with the 'sidelines' option, they will probably put the dots in between the markers.

Also, if you have a bass that was defretted then the dots will be in the original positions too.

I have an old Pbass that I had the frets pulled and therefore the side dots are NOT on the note. At the oddest moments this can throw me off on-stage if I've just changed basses. I'm hoping the other musicians just think I'm experimenting with that fretless sound.
