Title: Bad timing!!
Post by: jazzyvee on February 15, 2025, 12:27:12 AM
At last I have found a potential buyer for my Bocate Europa 5 stringer and a bass player is meeting me to try the bass out today.
I took it out of the case to practice with and clean it up yesterday and found the volume control is not working properly.
Approx the first half of movement hardly raises the volume, however once you get to the last half, it behaves like it is the start point of the sweep and goes from virtually nothing to max within that range.
I tried doing the exercising of the knob many times and that hasn't improved anything. But I did notice that when turning it fast, there is a grating sound through the amp but not when turned slowly.

I took it out on a gig towards the end of last year and used it at rehearsals last year and it has been fine.
Shame it decided to play up when there is a seller.
I will have to call the potential buyer and see how he wants to proceed. As it would be his first alembic so I would want that to be a perfect one.
I can get a replacement pot from Mica and fix it for him or knock a bit off and he can do that if he is happy that everything else about the bass is fine, which it is.

I would be inclined to keep turning it and see if the self cleaning mode needs a little extra.

Or is there possibly a volume pot among some of those leftover parts from where you changed over your other basses to Anniversary electronics...?

I have had email contact with Mica this week with some things to test suggested by Ron. I carried out those tests and everything was showing as ok. Then I did a load of exercising well over 100 more times on all the pots and switches on the bass and now the bass volume control is behaving as it should. I have been using it for practice this week and so far it's maintained proper functionality and no grating sound.

Greg, i didn't even think of that. I will have a look and see, in case the issue returns.
