Title: Band Etiquette Opinions Sought
Post by: lbpesq on January 05, 2025, 11:49:32 AM
Looking for opinions on a particular situation.   I’m in a band that has both a website and facebook page.  I handle the website and another member was hosting the facebook page.  The person handling the facebook page quit the band.  I recently discovered that he took down the facebook page and we lost all of our followers.  I can certainly understand that, after leaving the band, he didn’t want to oversee the facebook page.   But it seems to me the proper way to handle it was to give the band the opportunity to take over the facebook page prior to arbitrarily deleting it.  Am I wrong to be disappointed and even a little pissed about this?  If I left the band I would let them know I no longer desired to run the website and would happily hand it over.  Am I out of line in feeling this way?

You are not out of line, Bill.  It sounds like he left abruptly and a little miffed.
His reaction to delete the Facebook paged shows a distinct lack of professionalism.

Yeah that was a cheap shot.  I really don't know enough about FB to know the answer to this question; is there any way you can recover the followers? Like through a connected account? If so, I wouldn't worry about it anymore. If you can't, I guess it's just a square-one situation.

Harwell-Grice Band's website hosting service one time got jacked by a Chinese Restaurant. In China. Gabe forgot to pay a guy or something... they went to post about an upcoming gig on the band homepage annnnnd... WTH?! Unless you wanted them with duck sauce or hot mustard, fuggitaboutit.

If it's somewhat helpful:

We never know what is going on in someone else's life, someone else's head; what other issues and/or stresses, family, work, health, depression, mental lapses, etc.  Sometimes, perhaps often, we never know all the reasons behind why people do what they do, what's going on in their head, how they went down that road and made that turn; like the guy in Las Vegas with the Cyber Truck.  How did he get there?  Lots of people, a good many people, make decisions that aren't rational, don't make sense.  And perhaps most of them get trapped in some thought patterns in their head, and they keep missing the off ramp out of the trap, and make a wrong turn.

So, sometimes, perhaps, we can just hope that they find a way out of the trap, see the exit sign, and find some clarity.

People do things that don't make sense.  And often, they really have no idea why.

As Gregory said (in a lot less words), we just move forward from where we are now and do whatever comes next.

Oh, and I'm guessing that in our world, a lot more crazy stuff than that is going to be getting our attention.  And, I feel fairly certain, there will also be people doing wonderful things, and bringing joy to many in that same crazy world.  And a lot of it will be through music.

I thought Deadiquette was a thing. Sounds more like something a metal guy would do. I hope all will be peacefully resolved and your long strange trip will continue with much joy.

Sounds to me like they walked away with your customer list. Totally out of line.

seems kind of a poor move, but he possibly deleted it before thinking about what he should have done...we've all probably pressed a button before thinking; thankfully none of us work in missile silos...Tony.

Yea, I’d kind of like to think that was the case.

Also sounds like a bit of mis-communication. If there are shared responsibilities and a member tells you they are leaving that is the time to address who will assume their responsibility and how it will be transferred. I don't do social media and have little idea of how Facebook works but do know that they track and profile every member. If you put up a new page with the right keywords your followers should be able to easily find it, or it will find them.

I would be more than a little pissed. That's completely unprofessional. They should have just handed over the admin roll to another band member.
