kinda got a soft spot for stienies, but i sure wouldn't fork over that kinda ca$h for one. i'm gettin old, gigging with a 12-Lb. monster 5-string bass hanging on my shoulder ain't the walk in the park it useta be. a few years ago i had a mid-80's XL-2 with upgraded preamp (haz labs?) that was every bit the tone monster my alembics were/are. i had to stop using rotosounds on it because it had so much top end. lately i've been longing for a light 5-string that won't break my back. the standard graphite 5-string XL's are apparently 5-string hardware on a 4-string body (at least all the ones i tried). the string spacing was like playing a giut@r with thick strings. steinberger apparantly made a wide 5-string, similarly outrageously priced:

if my retirement nest egg was about 10x what it is now, i'd consider it.

IIRC in an interview Ned said they had the the idea and made the first prototype and it sounded terrible.
Interesting listing, thanks for sharing that.
