Title: My first Alembic!
Post by: suegmc on September 08, 2024, 08:22:05 AM
Hello everyone!  I am so excited to own my first Alembic, a 2019 Darling custom cocobolo short-scale bass.  I just got it yesterday and I am totally in love!(https://imgur.com/a/GzJRfua).  I can't wait to learn more about my bass and other Alembics here!
I am new to using this type of forum, so I am not sure if the photo will appear (I used Imgur)

Welcome to Alembic and to this forum. If you start to visit regularly you will build up a lot of knowledge about these fabulous instruments. You have a beauty of a bass. What sort of music are you playing.

Thanks, I just joined this club and looking forward to reading through many of the posts.  I love blues, southern rock, and many other forms of music.  I love the 80s music (I was in college then), and hopefully someday will approach learning jazz!

Congrats!  And yes, beautiful bass!  And if I recall correctly, East Meets West electronics?

Thanks! Yes, east meets west electronics. Can you explain what that means please?

I think East meets West refers to combining the east coast style bass/treble tone controls with the west coast style low pass filter/Q switch tone controls into one package. Others more knowledgeable about that set up can explain more.

Welcome Sue!

That's a beauty and we hope you're enjoying playing it.  I didn't realize the Darling was also a bass model (shows you what I know :o ). Serial number starts with "JB"?  The combination of that particular body style, those wood choices, and that electronics package makes your bass unique.  And we hope you find it to be a perfect fit!

Thanks!  She is absolutely stunning, I am thoroughly enjoying playing her!!
I could not find any other information about the Darling bass  (just the Darling guitar).   The model number is JSB4, but the serial number is J14687, which I thought was strange, because aren't the first 2 numbers after the J supposed to be the year completed?  It was completed Nov 28, 2018, based on the spec sheet (attached).

I hope you don't mind but I found the original listing with a bunch of great pictures (we love pics in here):
https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/alembic-darling-custom-short-scale-4-string.2587245/ (https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/alembic-darling-custom-short-scale-4-string.2587245/)

Our Alembic serial numbers do not always run as expected.  It's possible your bass was commissioned in 2014 and for whatever reason wasn't completed until 2018.  And then the seller called it a 2019 just to add to the fun.  Nonetheless, that's a great combination of options.  I love the blue / amber side-LEDs, that's a nice look.

If you have any questions about your new axe this is the place to ask.  Lot's of folks in here who know a lot about these instruments.  Including the Wickersham family who founded the company and still design and build all these fine instruments!

Yup, that is the ad I bought it from, only from the TalkBass.com site.  l am very excited to learn more about all the features, as it is very different from my other basses!

Generally, the two digit code for the year is before the letter code for the model.  The 14687 following the letter code represents that the bass is the (approximately) 14,687th instrument made by Alembic.

Based on my recollection, when I ordered my custom signature deluxe, the short scale Darling had just joined the Alembic line. I ended up with something a bit different because at the point I was hesitant to go short scale...Now I have two SC shorties. You're going to love that bass and Im sure the coco bolo looks even better in person than it does in the photos.

I absolutely love the short scale and the thin neck already!  And yes, that coco bolo in person is stunning!
