in austraila. might be kinda fun to have in the collection but i'm not ever buying another medium scale.

Yeah, nice one! Looks like a walnut top.
-
One of my recurrent dream basses is an 8-string Alembic. It might happen - if not, I am still fortunate to have been the caretaker for an '85 Spoiler Exploiter, and to currently have a Rickenbacker 4003S/8 in my care.
I think I could get along with this one!

Mine, too...

My open secret indulgence would be a 10 string Spyder even though I have currently no gigging opportunities where I could use it. I could cope with an 8 stringer though.
-
price dropped to $5449 + $320 shipping USD. wonder if that'd get it to the CONUS? almost tempting at that price, medium scale notwithstanding. haven't palyed an 8-string in a while.
just joined another band, always fun showing up to rehersal with a bass like nobody's seen before (gotta tell ya, the MKD is quite the conversation starter) but, .....nahhh!
-
That's a pretty nice price by today's standards. I have an 8 string, and I have an Alembic Exploiter. But I don't have an 8 string Alembic Exploiter. ;D
PS - I have no intention of going after this one.

i keep telling myself that. pretty soon i might start believing it 🗿

A rare beast.......at a fraction of still-available Spyder 8 strings ($31,800) Please note the setup.....the octave string is above the fundamental. This is the way my Zon 8 is set up and I find it preferable (for finger plucking) to the other way around like on my Spyder 8 and Rick 8. Using a pick, the Spyder is Heaven!
You know you wanna buy this..... 8) ;)

I'm getting GAS just being a bystander....
-
Second-hand GAS? :-\ ::)

saw that. not helping.
plus - i just got started with this crew that wants to roll as a 3-piece backing a front person. i gotta lotta sonic space to fill. you'd think a bi-amped MKD strung with roto rounds would do it. but as they say, there's always room for more. hmmmmm......

Since it’s from Australia, you’ll be Been Down Under!

I think I only tried an 8-string for a moment somewhere back in my past. But I would have thought the string arrangement on this one - high string on the low side (or however you want to describe it) - would be better for pick playing? I would have thought for finger-style you'd want to touch the thinner string first. No? I dunno.

I have a rare 1980 Ibanez MC-980 8-string. It's 32" scale like this Exploiter.
But Alembic is the real deal...

Zing! 🤯🗿

Maybe its just the setup. The 8-string Rick is a chore to play....the 8 Zon is smooth / mellow.....almost like a fretless vibe. And the Alembic is just "there". An effortless joy to play.
The condition is amazing for a 37yo instrument. A real time capsule.

well other than getting to bloviate on a world stage for lack of something better to do (it's the day after my first late night rehearsal in a long time. adjusting to new schedule. i'm not good for a whole lotta anything today.) the only thing that keeps me in this thread is that it's an 8-string exploiter fer cryin out loud. no body shape hangs in a strap this one does. perfect balance, no neck dive, my right arm rests in the perfect spot that puts my fingers just over the end of the fingerboard. (imho. ymmv. and all that rot.)
but i see a replay of about 3 years ago when i took a shot at a medium scale exploiter and after going thru a whole lotta brain damage with the medium scale, i finally sold it to a clubber who is playing the dickens out of it the last time i checked.
it wasn't all bad - i wound up buying a hot tub with the proceeds and it cleared a spot for the ebony amazon series II that followed it.
so i dunno. got the $, that ain't the issue. swore i wouldn't do it again. or again. gettin to be 'bout time to walk the dog, get baked and sit in the medium-scale koa exploiter memorial hot tub and meditate on this awhile.

Just doin’ my part for “GAS exploration!” ;)

"Please note the setup.....the octave string is above the fundamental."
This to me is the "proper" way to set up a multi-course instrument. My first 8 string had them the other way around, and I found it slightly harder to hold both strings down with my fretting fingers. When I bought my '93 Ric 8 back in 2008, I was very happy that a previous owner had already switched the strings around to octave above fundamentals with a new nut. I only play 8s with a pick FWIW.

…..aaaaand it’s gone! Is it heading to the Mile High?

aaaaand it’s gone!
thank heavens! been distracted, haven't been watching. outta sight, outta mind dontcha know.
Is it heading to the Mile High?
not to the House 'oBeenDown, that's fer sure. just when my resistance would ebb and i'd have my finger on the trigger, i'd hear one of the guys that lives in my head yelling "it's a medium-scale, you moron!". so while it was a pleasant fantasy, i'll try to be a better steward of my hoard and only spend it on stuff that's not gonna make me crazy.
