Tim, your serial looks like it must be missing a digit in the final part, as for 2003 it would be over 10,000 (the year and model indicators will vary, but the final number is steady as she goes).

Nice looking bass.  Based on Adriann's suggestion and the Reverb photo with the A-sting in the way, I'm gonna guess it's 03MJ13182..?

Hey Tim,

Congrats!  Great to hear this one is coming your way.  Hope you really enjoy it and it gets along well with its siblings.

Be patient with the serial number lookup request.  They tend to come in waves whenever Mica finds a moment to pull out the file drawers.  Post more pics once you have it in hand.  :)

thanks Jimmy J understood👍

by the way maybe I could ask-used to smaller body Alembics (Essence) and haven't seen this MK standard in the wild yet-any idea if this body shape is appreciably larger?
don't think it's as large as the Series....

anyway thanks again!

Looking at the various model pages (http://www.alembic.com/prod/basses.html) the classic shapes appear to have an overall width just under 14" for a 4 string. For an Essence, that's 12" - so quite a difference. This is a classic Large Body, so coming from a petite Essence it may take some getting used to, also due to the longer reach to the nut.

thanks again Adriaan
I measured one of them at 12.5" so something less than 14" shouldn't be too bad, and I've got larger (bass) guitars.
might be a good shape for playing seated.
about 5 days out

Here is the old body shape page, I think these are to the same scale relative to each other: http://www.alembic.com/info/bodyshapes.html

Here's an overlay Mica sent me while we were planning my custom build.  My eyeball/yardstick measurements of my '82 Spoiler put it right at 14" wide, so this should still give an idea of how an Essence compares to an MK.

hey Spoilers!
thanks for that page, bet it was fun working with Mica.
hope your build is everything you imagined.
just received my '03MK it measures 15 1/2" so getting wider.
still comfy though can't really anchor my right thumb against the end of the fretboard as usual, but the pickup edge serves.
saw that this is considered a 'large' body-do they go any wider still?

will have to get a group photo now.

really appreciate everyone's time!

The widest would be the original Balance shape, which was a precursor to the Balance-K shape which in turn has proven quite popular. My Balance-K 6 string comes in at 15" at its widest

Hey Tim... glad to hear you new bass arrived, play it in good health.

I have a Balance-K 5-string which is a bit over 14" at its widest, suspect that a Balance-K 4-string would be even narrower.

The limit is 1,000 kB {which is slightly under 1 MB). There are different approaches to reducing the file size, besides changing to a lower resolution, like image size or compression.
