Title: Alembic Eight-string bass on Reverb
Post by: StephenR on June 11, 2024, 04:16:05 PM
Here is something you certainly don't see everyday, a full range eight-string bass, no doubled strings. And it is a beautiful Alembic to boot. Looks like they decided to double up on pickups and stagger them to cover width of the strings and break the strings into a bass and treble side. There are bass and treble controls for each pickup. Quite a unique instrument!

gotta wonder how much something like that weighs. it almost looks like 2 four-stringers mashed togrther. zero radius fingerboard.  i  got long skinny fingers, pretty sure i'd have a tough time traversing the fingerboard from low string to high.  you could probably play a two-octave scale without having to move up the neck.  medium scale, no surprise there.  2 truss rods?  wonder how it's tuned?  so many questions.

Weighs just under 14.5 pounds.  :o Zero radius fingerboard. Separate vol/bass/treble and outputs for the lower 4 and the upper 4. I'm wondering if the original intent was to play it like a Chapman Stick? It's gorgeous, but too much for me in multiple ways.  ;D

Something like that was built during the year I worked at the Mothership for a guy from Las Vegas (who rode his bicycle to Santa Rosa to visit the factory, IIRC). Wouldn't be surprised if it was that bass, because how many could there be?

This looks like the perfect bass for Brendan Wires (https://www.brendanwires.com/).

Amazing player! Check out the sound clips available on the website. I can personally attest that he really does play that well live - I've heard him several times. I couldn't believe he was playing in a little coffeehouse.

The bass will be traveling to Jersey next week. Special thanks to Heath at  Chicago Vintage for a great price and an easy transaction.

Thank you o’ princess of the mothership. I couldn’t resist this piece of history. I keep telling myself I’m done and I get whacked on the back of the head with a cosmic 2x4. So now I house 4, 5,6 8 and 10 string Alembic’s   I sold the 7.
Hope you and the whole family are doing great and you’re all in my prayers daily.

Thanks very much everyone. I’m always up for a new challenge   Though I will never rise to trip’s use of this inspiring instrument, sincere efforts will be made.
I had a stickbass years ago but it required the abdomen of a teenager to play comfortably. With this, that won’t be an issue!
Btw the store was Rock and roll vintage and synth in Chicago. Heath was the man there. They have a lot of funky pieces.

Well ups changed the delivery window on me 4 times from 10 am to 7:30 pm. I had to leave at 6:15 for a function. So now it’s Saturday 4:30-7:30 pm. Another message says Monday.
I am at the mercy of the machine. The frustration comes when you look at the tracking map and when it’s 3  blocks away and decides to go another route. Sooooooo close.

The Machine is a heartless creature.
Certain the beast of an 8 string will be happy in your hands!

I may have gone after the truck, if it was three blocks from my house! You're a better man than I am Dan. Hopefully it makes a surprise visit, before Monday. Best of luck with your new beast!

Regards,
Pete

Well , it did arrive at about 6:40 etc. tuned it up, replaced the batteries and machine screws for the control plate.  Can’t imagine why there were wood screws in there.
Great tone and sustain. This animal is going to take quite a bit of time to become comfortable with. The left and right hands don’t always work together on the string choice real estate. After working with this I’m going to fly around on the SCBB!
