Made a trip up to Alembic yesterday - got to play a whole bunch of basses! Put together a little clip, playing Rush bass lines on a Stanley Clarke bass - not any of the ones pictured, but a special one!

WOW !!!!

Nice man, how did you like the Crest comparing it to Stanley Clarke model?
-
Nice, what did you think of the Crest?
-
The Crest was awesome! Actually, that was the first thing I played.
It was really easy to play, and surprisingly light! Unfortunately I didn't take a strap - kinda thinking about going back to play it again - next time I'd like to try recording the audio direct.

Thank you for posting. Wonderful sounding instrument!

Loving that sound Harry. I have not heard that track Fire on the Mountain so decided to check it out. Nice! Are you mostly a pick player?
Even though i have a guitar background, I had never played bass with a pick until a couple of weeks ago when I started learning some Crusaders tracks and one of their older tracks sounded like the bassie was using a Pbass with pick. So i got out my P-style pickup laden Elan and had a go with 3 mm Dunlop stubby and it had a smidgen of the Phil tone but the attack sounded a bit hard. What picks do you use to get that warm punch without the attack being too up front?
-
Thanks jazzyvee! I consider myself 50% pick/50% fingers, though I have actually started practicing slapping again too.
I tend to attack the strings with a fair amount of force - to me, that's part of the sound (or my sound at least). In the video I think I am using my wood pick made by "Timber Tones" - it's pretty thick but has a beveled end, and is surprisingly resistant to round wounds. Actually, when I was visiting Alembic I took 3 picks - my wooden one, a Telefunken graphite, and a "regular" one (delrin?) - Mica also had a couple of cool ones - we could definitely hear differences! The graphite one was a bit thinner, and the wood one was my favorite, though not that different than the "normal" one.
I think the Alembic filter offers a lot of opportunities with pick playing - I had a negative comment on Facebook where they said "wow that fret buzz" (I deleted the video) - but to me, that's a sound in the room that you wouldn't hear on a recording or live. I wonder if that might be part of what you're hearing?
