The devastating fire in Hawaii has touched the Alembic Club. The person responsible for migrating us from the old Discus platform to this new platform has his home and business destroyed by the fire in Lahaina. Since then, Ralph has been managing the hosting and technical details of the Alembic Club to keep things running smoothly here.
Ralph's Go Fund Me (https://www.gofundme.com/f/rebuild-the-local-it-business-from-lahaina?utm_campaign=m_pd+share-sheet&utm_content=undefined&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer&utm_term=undefined) page has a modest goal. I spoke with him today and he's in good spirits, saying it's a good thing he's an expert in disaster recovery, and that he intends to return to Lahaina when he can. It's his community and he knows they will need his expertise when the rebuilding starts.
Anything and everything helps. If you're able to send something to Ralph, I know it will be deeply appreciated.

Separately, I've had one report of an Alembic bass perishing in the Lahaina fire, a 1998 Excel. So far, everyone I've checked in with everyone I know in Lahaina, and they all reported their personal safety, but total material loss. The news coming out is slow, but the reports are that there are still many missing people still, so the extent of the damage won't be tallied for a while.

All the best to those in Maui and the islands. I spoke to some there and everyone is in a state of shock. Tragic.

Been wondering about the fate of Fleetwood's on Front St. All it says is 'closed until further notice'.
Someone in the know, is there an account or sign-in required for GoFundMe? I can't seem to get my phone to cooperate with the page.
-
I had to make an account to donate - and I did that from desktop machine.

Greg, from the photos of Lahaina I have seen, Fleetwood's was in the area of Front Street which was completely destroyed by the fire. The loss of life, homes, and history is a massive tragedy.

Greg, SFGate reported that Fleetwood's was destroyed by the fire.
Good friends of ours moved back to the Bay Area from Kihei in late June so they were thankfully in a safe place. The friends they have in the Kihei area luckily did not live in the area of Kihei that burned. Our other friends on Maui live in Hana and their properties were safe since they are on the other side of the island. It is really difficult to fully comprehend the totality of the losses from these fires.

... is there an account or sign-in required for GoFundMe?...
I did not need an account nor did I need to sign-in. I did choose to leave my name, but you can also give anonymously. I used PayPal and received an acknowledgement.
To add to what Mica said; though in the background and unseen, Ralph has been integral to the transition and continued maintenance of our online community here. We wouldn't be where we are without him.

Not nearly equivalent to the Maui fires…..Yesterday, a City Park 1.2miles from my home caught fire. We were all sent level 2 evacuation texts and the power was cut. 10 total acres burned in a couple hours. It was a three-alarm fire…they pretty much let the woodland burn while protecting the nearest homes. No loss of life or property.
For the first time, I wondered how fast I could load up 40+ basses….the first, of course would be the 5 Alembics! It was a stressful afternoon. While yesterday was 96degrees, we didn’t have the winds Maui had.

I purposefully don't consume any television at all, but the shards of news I have heard are tragic. I think it's a thing of I need to be connected to the internet a different way other than the mobile app to donate... I have to make a trip into town first of next week to see about something at HR. I'll get on a desktop somewhere. Anybody who helps keep the Club here running needs help, I'm in.
*That's too bad about Fleetwood's... Mick loved talking about his place in interviews.

Thanks for your generous donations to Ralph. It's really helping him get back in business so that he can help others there. If you want to follow the rebuilding process, he started a forum to show how it's going (https://randemsystems.com/support/randem-systems-s-office-rebuild-progress/).

We've had a wet summer in Boulder, CO, until now. Which means lots of fuel everywhere. We're still shellshocked by the Marshall Fire which devastated more than 1,000 buildings in a matter of a few hours, mostly homes. Fire is now happening around the world and I think it's a good idea to have an evacuation plan. I fear the wind.
