Title: String Swings on Studs?
Post by: Jon Kon on August 06, 2023, 10:54:34 AM
This may have been discussed before. I have a distillate model guitar I would like to hang from a string swing. I do interior trim for a living so proper installation to a stud is no problem. My question is do I have any need to worry about the weight of the distillate? I understand it’s not a 6 string bass, but it’s also heavier than a standard strat as well. Just crossing the Ts and dotting the Is before I commit. Thanks in advance for the replies!

I use String Swings too, but not for my Alembic guitars. They are a very secure hanger when mounted to something very solid, like a stud. Mine are anchored to a 1×6 rough cedar headboard that runs around my room. I just can't quite be comfortable with my Alembics hanging when there are stands close by. Just me.

I would love to show off my Alembic guitars but other than keeping two on secure stands (in an alcove where no one can trip over them) I've just never been comfortable with wall mounting.  And you are correct to be concerned about the weight factor. I know a guy who knows a guy who hung his short scale standard point Series I on the wall and 5-years later it was long scale  ;D

With my trepidation already posted, I will tell you that this guitar has hung on a String Swing for about 9 months... it is about the approximate size and weight of your Distillate guitar.

I use the Hercules guitar hangers.   They automatically lock down by gravity when you insert a guitar.   Being in California, I’m concerned about the guitar falling off in an earthquake.   Donner makes similar locking hangers for less $.  I haven’t tried them, but they are 3 for $25 on Amazon with good reviews.   I’ve had heavy Les Pauls, basses, and a couple of Alembic guitars hanging at various times with no problems.

1)  There is no danger to the instrument from the simple act of hanging.
2)  Put a long enough screw into the stud and you could probably hang a Minarek triple-neck by its middle headstock without worry.

What Peter said. I have all my most expensive instruments on String Swings in my music room. 20+ years, no issues whatsoever.

I use the Hercules hangers like Bill. I mounted mine to a stained and finished piece of 3/4" tulip poplar with screws and nuts. I mounted the wood board to studs in the wall with 3 1/2" screws. I have never had a problem with a bass accidentally falling or the hanger mounts loosening up.

Personally , I like Off the wall hangers. triangle 3 point cast plate that the hanger attaches to. I've hung many Alembic basses from them as well as other brands and guitars such as Les Pauls. Never came loose from the wall.

I've been using Hercules hangers mounted into the studs with I believe 3" drywall screws.  I've had 14 of them in constant use for nine years with no incidents.  A couple of the basses I've hung on them weigh over ten pounds.

Been hanging around now for 10+ years!  Slot board with 3” deck screws into studs. Looking for hangers for Steinberger basses (headless). Unable to find the original plexiglass ones.

I should mention, mine are from Kentucky Hot Brown Pedalboards.   I have a jazzbox & a Tele on them for about 5-6 years now; mollies & screws into 124 year old plaster.  No problems.
