Hello...first post...here goes....
I just bought a used 2001 Essence short scale. The action looks low and there is more than the acceptable clicking of strings hitting frets when I finger pick, especially the A string. I used a straight edge and noticed that the neck has a slight back-bow. I want to set the bass up correctly but being my first Alembic I rather ask and be safe than sorry. Can you tell me the correct specs for a good starting point or where I can find this info? I have generic specs for setting up a bass but don't know if it applies to this bass. Thanks, Frank.

Just adjust both truss rods the same amount and start with 1/4 turn incrememnts until you have the desired relief for your playing style. For example, if you play hard, don't expect the bass not to buzz with low action.
We don't have any hard-set specs for setup, it's all done by feel. We set up our instruments to have very low action from the factory. If it's too low, raising the action is trivial compared to lowering it when the bass hasn't been set that low before.
String tension varies greatly, so I'd advise you use the strings you prefer most when doing the setup.
Also, everytime you do anything to change the length of the vibrating string (truss rod adjustment, changing the height of either the nut or bridge) you should reintonate.

Thanks for the fast response...you said to turn the nuts on the truss rods the same amount. This neck was almost flat with maybe a slight back-bow when I bought it from the original owner yesterday. In turning the E side nut 1/4 turn I saw improvement and have since moved it another quarter today...BUT, when I loosened the G side nut 1/4 yesterday it became almost loose like it was barely against the neck. If I turn it another quarter loose today to be equal with the other nut it will be real loose and not against the neck at all like it is not doing anything. Any suggestion here? I would say the 2 nuts are now within a 1/4 to 1/2 turn of each other judging by the few threads showing past the 2 nuts. The G side has more thread showing even though it is looser against the neck. When making the truss rod adjustment do you do it with the strings loose or tight? Thanks

The bass should be fully tuned when making adjustments to the truss rod or string height. Also, the bass hold be in playing position when making height determinations... Even having it on a bench will change the bow and give a false indication of the string height. Always test by playing the instrument.
