Title: 1980 Doubleneck Series bass/guitar
Post by: edwardofhuncote on April 09, 2023, 04:15:56 PM

Not too many numbers away from my other Series bass...

I wonder what each one's particulars are? This one is actually within driving distance for me.

If you do decide to come down to look at it be sure to give me a call and we can get together for a talk and quick bite to eat.

Yeah Keith, we're overdue for a Carolina mini-meet-up anyway.

This doubleneck has been on the sale block a couple times... it's a cool thing.

Thanks for the link to the early thread on it Dave. ;)

I see where this one has been relisted... such a cool thing. If my circumstances were just a bit different in a positive way, I'd have to make a play for it. I'm quite positive I'd do fine with the upper neck, but would struggle to play the guitar. Still, what a cool old Dragon.

*weird coincidence, just noticed the serial number is directly after Lara Lovely's bass.

This raises a question that has frequently occurred to me; why does almost every guitar/bass doubleneck I've ever seen, of any make, have the bass on top?  Were I to order one, there is no doubt it would be the other way.  (The same seems to also be the rule for 6-12 doubles; I'd want the 12 on top - and apparently the only one.)

Peter (who will stipulate that the question is entirely academic, as neither his back nor his "chops" call for such a beast)

Hmmm... I've never thought about it. Probably because I haven't ever played one. For obvious reasons, I think I'd rather have the bass on the uppermost neck, especially if it happened to be fretless.

FWIW Coz, Mayer's been playing a doubleneck Martin on this most recent tour with the 12-string neck on top and the 6 down below. Pretty cool box.

My double-neck 6/12 has the 12 string on top.

Do tell!  I don't believe that's one you've pulled out during my visits (or your homegrown is even better than I thought and I did play it, but missed the whole thing....)

Peter (who wonders, if he did play it, did he like it?)

I’m seriously considering this instrument.  Hey, it’s Series I!  I don’t play guitar but I have an affinity for the odd!  It must be incredibly heavy too.  Still… I don’t flip gear so it would remain with my other Alembics…..just need proof it’s not a scam.

I don't think it's a scam Gary, this same guy's had it for a while. And it's a pretty detailed ad that seems to add up to legitimate. According to the description, he got it from the original owner (who posted in the thread Dave linked upthread) and it's been back to Alembic, so you might talk to Mica about it.

Still thinking about pulling the trigger on this.  I've been going through some challenging health issues this month with studies, MRI's & biopsy.  With your health issues Greg, did you have GAS when you were going through your challenges?  Health challenges put a whole new perspective on how you will deal with the future.  Expenses are Not an issue, I have a Cadillac Health plan.

Hi Guys, Earl here. I'm the owner/seller. It's legit. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I have 2 6-string Europa basses from the early 90's also (one fretted and one fretless). But not for sale, just by the way.

Looks like zebrawood, kind of understated in its elegance.

100% Zebrawood.

Thank you Mica.  The original owner named this bass Leviathan according to a link upthread.  Do have any recollection of "another" Leviathan?  Seems like an appropriate name for this beast.

😄 No help/enabling from me Gary, I actually sold and gifted a bunch of my instruments when that chapter of life was being read aloud. Just two Alembics, the rest were an assortment of acoustic and electric guitars, etc. It wasn't that I needed the money, just that the basses needed to be played more.

Looks like the owner has dropped in on us here, (upthread) so now you can contact directly.

I live about 20 minutes south of Raleigh in Southern Wake County. If a potential buyer wants me to give the instrument a look over and the seller is ok with that let me know. I don't want to get involved with an escrow situation as I don't want to be responsible for shipping but looking the instrument over and vouching that it is where the listing says it is isn't a problem.

Now the fretting begins on a safe transit back to the West Coast!  Like worrying about your Grandmas dining room table arriving in one piece!

Leviathan arrived today here on the West Coast. Yer gonna ask…17.2lbs!
Got the 5 siblings out on stands…..going in for neck surgery in 12 hours and will have a 10lb weight lift restriction for weeks. At least they’re all out beforehand. The crazy-big Amp with the ELF integrator is out too. I find it. Very comfortable to play seated.
I’ll post pictures when I’m able to safely handle the weight. I need to properly document all 6 here on the site in their proper categories.
I’ve owned Alembics for 30 years and this is my first Series 1.

Got a question for y’all. At 44 Years old, the Anvil flight case interior has dissolved , anyone know where to restore a case interior? The outside is in remarkable shape.

See ya on the other side in a few days. My current left arm paralysis didn’t completely prevent me from playing it. This will be a great incentive in my PT / recovery.  Getting C5 vertebrate removed but no guarantee on reversal of partial paralysis.

Woo! What a monster. That's really something.
Regarding the foam, see if you can find a local flight case shop. They should be able to rehab the interior. We've done a few where I work at MT Cases outside Chicago. I remember re-doing Rick Nielsen's 5 neck interior. We also built a whole new case for his double neck known as "Uncle Dick".
