Title: R.I.P. Pigpen
Post by: lbpesq on March 08, 2023, 10:57:38 AM
Pig passed away 50 years ago, today.  He was a member of the “27 Club” along with Janis, Jimi, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, and, more recently, Kurt Cobain.   Pig was the best frontman the Dead ever had.  He is still missed.

Sure miss Pigpen and am glad I got to see him perform a number of times. I went to the first show the Dead played after he passed and it seemed weird knowing he would never return to the stage. This was also the beginning of the wall of sound development era, the sound of the new PA was another big change to absorb. My favorite Pig shows were the Academy of Music run in 1972. I was just knocked out by the beauty of "The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)" and loved all the shows I have seen or heard with both Pig and Keith on keyboards. 50 years... where does the time go?

Stephen, are you referring to the Nassau Coliseum shows?  I made one of those, too.

Nassau... 3/15 with the Sons Of Champlin opening the show. It was only recently that I realized the Pink Floyd Radio City Music Hall "Dark Side of the Moon" show I went to was two days later. I went to a second Nassau show that week with the New Riders opening, the Sons had a death inin their family and only played the first night. The internet has been great for filling in holes in my memory and I am constantly surprised by how close together certain key shows and events in my life were.

OK, even with my new specs that looked at first like you said "so dose together".......

Peter (who makes no furthur comment, except that his first 2 shows were in a 3-night run - but could not for the life of him tell you if he saw 1 & 2 or 2 & 3))
