Title: Alembic Europa 5 Bocate
Post by: jazzyvee on March 07, 2023, 04:13:57 AM
I'm about to put this bass up for sale. I've had it since 2005, and bought it from a member here. It's been a great bass over the years but recently I have been using it less and less in preference to my two filter basses.

I will put some photos on here later but if anyone is interested in advance of that drop me a private message and we can talk there. I haven't yet decided what the going rate is for it.
Here is a link on here to it. '97 Europa 5-String Bocate Top (alembic.com) (https://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=9143.0)

It now does have my initials inlaid onto the 12th fret and some fret-fx led's which I will probably take off as they are a bit delicate now.

After checking sold listings on Reverb all that are older than mine , i'm going to list it at £5500 ono which is lower than the average.
The bass is in excellent condition. I can remove the fretfx if it is not required. There is an inlay of my initials in the 12th fret which was done by Jaydee custom guitars about 12 years or so ago plus and my name engraved on the truss rod cavity which i may be able to remove if if is a deal breaker or the buyer can just reverse it. The switches are mounted on chrome plated washers as a few years i installed some East ACG filter based electronics which required enlarging the existing switch holes to fit the filter controls. The original electronics have been back in the bass for ages now but I had to get larger washers mount the original switches.  If I can find some black washers I will install those instead.

The back control cavity cover is gold plated and was like that when i bought the bass. What else can I say. Well it is a great sounding bass and i am only selling it because it is not getting enough playing time so i'd rather it went to someone who will give it more attention.
Send me a PM if interested. I have an original case for it also.

you are not going to believe this.

i'm almost dead certain that's one of my old basses.  when you mentioned that it was bocate and had a gold plated control cavity cover, it set off a flashback to when i was living in seattle in 2001, living the life of a stock-option-rich dot-commer.  i bought this bass and its fretless essence cousin brand-new from guitar center somewheres between 1999 and 2000.  they both had been hanging there for some time and i had that freshly minted-almost-millionaire-overnight money burning a hole in my pocket.

i think the cover came up for auction on ebay from alembic sometime after i bought the bass and so i jumped on it.  the original cover was brass.  it's long lost.

here's a picture of my bass collection from those days.  my first exploiter. and a martin B-2 rounding it out.  the europa and exploiter went as trade bait for my first series II.  the essence went to some guy who i think was gonna have it fretted.  yikes!

that's freaking daft, mate!

Wow small world. I bought it from a member of this forum who was Italian but lived in America for a while, before moving over the to the UK and i collected it from him in London. Really nice guy, had a bass rig that was only a few inches off the ceiling and a nice series bass.
I did think of replacing the gold cavity cover and having one made to replace it. That said, if anyone has a spare cavity cover, let me know.

well i was so flabbergasted by seeing another one of my former instruments turn up here that i almost forgot my manners.

good luck with your sale, sir.  i hope the fact that it passed through my hands doesn't detract from its value.

Oh before i forget, i would also be interested in a trade, cash either way for a short scale series II 4 string or a Spectrum guitar.

Just a thought. There is a chance I could be in the states on tour later this year, subject to all the official stuff going through OK. So if anyone here is interested in the bass, I could bring this bass over for my tour and we can hash out a deal before I go back home.

It is indeed. I bought it from a forum member in 2005 so it would be good to be able to pass it on to another member.

A bass player on Facebook living in Vietnam wants to buy my bass and has given me the address if his friend's music shop in California that I can send the bass to. Anyone know of it in Westminster California?

Westminster is an area in Orange County just south of LA.  In fact, you'll be about 10 miles from there when you play Anaheim on August 26th...  This neighborhood is referred to as "Little Saigon" (even by Google maps) because of its large Vietnamese population.  So although I don't know how shipping a bass from the UK to the US gets it any closer to Viet Nam ... I would say that contact info is most likely legit.

Thanks Jimmy, i guess the shop will forward it on to Vietnam via their preferred shipping company, but then that's two lots of shipping and insurance costs for the buyer.  But I will try to find out how much it would cost for both places and let the buyer choose, if they are serious. Interesting that since I posted my message about an interested buyer, a member of is forum from the USA has also expressed interest. So we shall see what transpires.

New year, and reposted up for sale on Reverb.
Any interest from members here, drop me a PM especially if there is an opportunity for a trade based around a series II  short scale in dark wood, a 3 or more pickup Spectrum or Orion guitar.
