Title: Club notifications have gone haywire
Post by: jacko on February 28, 2023, 02:17:47 AM
I've opened my email this morning to find 65 notification emails from the Alembic club.  Mostly from a long time ago. Has something gone wrong overnight? Anyone else seen these?

I got a couple too... I just assumed it was related to the weekend reboot.

I haven't been here in quite awhile but had to return to ask the same question.  It seemed like the rate of notifications slowed down a lot for quite some time but I just received 35 email notifications since 12:03 AM today.  I'm trying to unsubscribe and that's not working either.  Must be a software change at Alembic?

My understanding is that the host server was down.  No idea what restarting it can impact.   Notifications?  Is that when you “follow” a thread and it send a message to your email when someone replies?

Don’t judge me.  I still use a flip phone.  I access this sight on an iPad and sometimes from a computer at work (during lunch and break time only).

I'll see your flip-phone and raise you "I don't use touchscreens; they're the work of the Devil".

I never even got a flip-phone been using VOIP for my limited communication needs. I do use the touchscreen on my iPad but have the device in a protective case with an attached keyboard that makes it function more like a mini-laptop. There are still a few things that I can't do without using the touch screen but I avoid it as much as possible. I drive a 20 year old "analog" car and hope it lasts forever, neither my wife or I want to buy a computer with wheels...

Another semi-luddite here.  While I do have an iPhone, I use it mostly as an outgoing phone.   Only family and close friends have the number and I refuse to text.   When I “unplug”, I want to be unplugged!  No Twitter, no Instagram, no tick tock, I have a facebook account with one friend, my son, so I could read his summaries of Oakland A’s games when he was a teenager.  I think I have about 200 unanswered “friend requests”.   Two cars, the “new” one is a 2006 Highlander Hybrid (the last Highlander went 297,000 miles).   The other is 30 years old this year.   I recently read that today’s teens spend half their waking hours staring at their phones and none of them can read or write script!    Not sure where we are going as a society, but I suspect we’re sitting in a huge hand-basket!

Now get off my lawn!

Bill, tgo

I'm over 100 now. They seem to be coming in batches 48 here 30 something there. I hadn't received any notifications for quite awhile and it is acting like something was restarted and no we a re being flooded from a backed up queue.

Full blown luddite here! I was accused of being one by my last boss. At the time, I was working as a network engineer for a semi-conductor manufacturing company. He wasn’t happy that I didn’t have a cell-phone. I was.

Like other folks here, I don’t do facebook, instagram, et al.

Catch ya’ll later, I’m going back under my rock.

Our little club got too big for the server it was on, so there is some behind the scenes stuff happening over the next couple days. Sorry about the email flood, we've contacted the provider for some insight there. Hopefully you won't even notice we're on the new server when that change happens.

Sincerest gratitude, doth I bestow Alembic, for our corner of the web.
Thus, our interest of such sonic splendour mayst be cultivated and realized.
Our music thus shalt blossom to worlds yet otherwise undiscovered.
New worlds yet beyond the threshold of conventional stringed instruments.
Behold the Sonic Alchemy revealed through the Magik of Alembic.

And it would appear that the Club is now on the new server!

A splendid rebirth and revival thus.
For us all to partake with enjoyment.
The brightest light dost shineth in our world.
Henceforth, we shalt prevail far onward.
Unbeknownst, adventures await beyond.

Adding my Thanks to Alembic for providing this cool little corner, and to the Moderators and behind-the-scenes folks who keep it working.

With an exception for discussion forums involving musical instruments, I too, avoid all social media platforms... always have. This is by far, my favorite spot to check-in morning and night. I really appreciate that it isn't filled with the same fluff bs threads that clutter the front page of TalkBass or UMGF. There's hardly a thread on here that I don't at least learn something from.

Over the years, I've been lucky enough to meet up and talk with quite a few folks here. Yeah, real friends... imagine that. Hope to meet more in years to come.

Must be your browser, rather than the connection. On android, click the square and flick your browser upward to close it. Then reopen the browser and see if you can access the Club again.

One more "oddity on the Alembic Club website" - has anyone but me been getting "this connection is not secure" when logging in? That started for me around the time of the server upgrade.

Current Firefox on Linux, and using the Firefox local password storage, if that matters....

Make sure that you access the Club at https://club.alembic.com

If you use a bookmark, verify that the web address for the bookmark does not start with http://

The only difference I have noticed, and this is probably my ancient Android operating system, the only way to edit a post, (which is often for me, trying to post from a tiny little touchscreen... and trying not to dork-spell stuff... the only way now is the 'Modify Post' button at the top/right. The little "Edit Post" button in the bottom/right does nothing.

I've noticed Firefox on Ubuntu is pretty poor at retaining sessions and preferences, though that's on my work laptop and I'm not accessing the Club from there. Using Chrome and the KeepassXC extension for passwords on Ubuntu, and no problems with sessions and preferences there. Chrome on my Android devices - pretty unproblematic.

The shortcut is working for me as a moderator, but that means there's no time-limit for edits. You should have 24 hours to edit after you post.

This little do-dad... the red one, doesn't work anymore. The green one does. I also notice just this post, the "Insert Quote" button doesn't work.

Again, I think it's probably on my end.

*I will try these buttons from my desktop computer tomorrow morning.

**These buttons do work on my computer at work. So I'm going to assume it's my poor old not-so-smart-anymore phone.

Make sure that you access the Club at https://club.alembic.com

Thanks - this is always good advice. I'm careful about using HTTPS. I've been using https://club.alembic.com all along.

I'm not a web developer but I can read enough HTML to see that the home page is loading a lot of resources using http: URLs - including some scripts apparently involved in the login process. I don't know whether that has changed at the server side, or whether a recent Firefox update has gotten more picky about this.

I don't stay logged in on websites, so each time I visit I need to log in again. Perhaps most people don't go through the login process each time, and thus are less likely to notice this issue?

This isn't a really big deal for me. I use unique passwords for every website I log in on, and I haven't put much personal information in my profile here.

Quote isn't working for me today so I will copy & paste.

"    One more "oddity on the Alembic Club website" - has anyone but me been getting "this connection is not secure" when logging in? That started for me around the time of the server upgrade.

Current Firefox on Linux, and using the Firefox local password storage, if that matters...."

"Make sure that you access the Club at https://club.alembic.com (https://club.alembic.com)

It isn't a target URL http: to https: problem. I use https: and see this error when I go to manually fill-in the password field. It appears to be something in the page that Firefox doesn't like.
