I am guessing the thread was about the new 1099 PayPal is sending out...
We can make it about that if anybody's up for it. At least in the USA, where form 1099's apply. I'm about to have my tax lady go through my stuff. I sold a couple basses and guitars this year, accepting PayPal for a couple. I think I'll dig back through and see what gains, if any there were, and file as such.
If it's more complicated than that, I reckon she'll tell me.

It was about a bad experience welovecats had with a buyer.

Ummm. That's too bad. I haven't personally been there yet. Had a good time parting with both of my Distillates... both went to very good homes. I do have to claim a little income though.

Keep your original receipts when buying gear.

Yup, definitely a good call. I keep stuff like that in a safe place, all together and easy to retrieve.
A lot of my 'education' came the hard way, after my little professional-musician / crash-diet in Nashville, Tennessee back in the 90's. Being young and kinda' clueless, and making more money than I had ever seen as a humble public servant back here in Virginia, it never occurred to me that I might owe taxes on that income. Without access to any good advice, you know, what receipts to save, what records to keep... I ended up paying the Commonwealth of Virginia income tax on all the money I made, a good portion of which was spent, living in the Great State of Tennessee. And about twenty-five other States we drove that van across. Live & Learn, son.
My tax lady sets aside 30 extra minutes to holler at me for something dumb I did, or didn't do, to this day.
