I know I purchased both of mine 4-5 years ago but both went for under $400. Then again, these used to go new for $1,800-$2,000 but are now in the neighborhood of three grand.

If you check the “sold” listings, F-1Xs and F-2Bs are all over the place, from <$1000 to the high teens.  Around a grand seems to be about average.

Prices on sold listings are not necessarily accurate either especially for stuff marked best offer accepted. If people don't buy when the prices are unreasonable they will eventually come down, or sit unsold for long periods of time like much of the Alembic stuff listed on Reverb at an "ambitious" price.

I bought a brand new F-2B from the alembic dealer in Paris for less than the price of that used F-1X. Highly optimistic.

Then there is this one.

When I posted the link it was listed as sold for $1800. Previous F-1X had sold for a grand. I guess he took it down and posted again at it's current price of $1200.

This is why it is next to impossible to figure out the actual value of anything being sold via Reverb and eBay.  FWIW... lots of listings get marked sold when the seller takes the listing down and re-lists it, doesn't mean it was ever sold for the price you see. One flipper used to change the prices on his listings multiple times a day trying to snag a gullible buyer... prices for the same item ping-ponged all over the place. Now they list everything at an inflated price with "best offer accepted". This keeps the actual selling price hidden when the item sells. The multiple listings for the same item at different price points coming from Japan don't help with clarity either.

It's listed as sold again. This time for $1200. Who knows but seems to be trending up in price.

I think Bill is about right... current sales on Alembic preamps are trading about $1k on average. Both of mine were bought from Club Members here, as was my SF-2, at $500-600 a couple-few years ago. About a third of what a new unit cost, during each timeframe.

$3k sounds like a lot, until you think about what it takes to produce an atomic-bomb-proof preamp, one at a time, by hand. If I needed one, I wouldn't flinch. What I really need is another DS-5R. I don't need it yet, but I do want one...  ::)

Greg

When/If you need another DS5 and if don’t mind the portable as opposed to the rack unit I’ve got several. I typically only use the rack mount version I purchased a ways back. I can send you an older portable one (if I can find it) for the price of shipping.

If Greg doesn't need one I maybe interested, Brian. What era is the unit from? Mine is a 77 and maybe worth having a spare around. Especially if it's newer.

I have owned three F-1X preamps. Paid between $400-$570. I agree its a wonderful unit and I pray I never find a silly reason to sell one again!

Thanks for the kind offer Brian, but I don't need one... I have the power supply for 77-621 here, plus a DS-5R I use in the house. Ideally, I'd like to have a second rack-mount unit for 80-1284, for when the Series II conversion and electronics upgrades are done.

I’m not sure. How are these dated? It came with my fretless from a touring musician in Canada. I know little about electronics but it seems to be modified in some way. I’ll send a photo tomorrow.

Thank you, Brian!
