Title: Internet / Comcast outage in northern California
Post by: mica on October 14, 2022, 03:52:32 PM
Comcast is out all over norther California. That means no phones here and very spotty internet through a backup connection. Our nameserver is on Comcast, so you can't see our website or receive any emails from us. Emails sent to us will be delayed but should pop through ones service is restored.

Thanks for the heads up. Seems okay so far in Oakland. Hope they get everyone back up and running soon!

We actually have Sonic at the shop, but the phone system is routed through a provider that uses Comcast up the line. Our nameservers are there too, so they get dumb when Comcast is out. Sadly, Sonic doesn't have great connectivity on our street, and don't have plans for upgrades any time soon.

No Sonic available in the part of Oakland where we live. They wanted me to prepay to reserve service that may or may not get activated unless enough families in our area also prepay. Stuck with Comcast for now.

Hello Stephen, I hope that you are all well. Some time before Sonic provided their independent propriety infrastructure in my neighbourhood, they canvassed door to door with an inquiry of interest in regard to their service. I gave them a very positive affirmative at the time that they approached me. About a year after that inquiry, they started to commence their process of integration with their equipment on the poles. I continued with my wait and see and then deliberate mentation in interest to ask my neighbours that had the new Sonic service installed as to how they rated the service in terms of performance and customer service.
I ask my neighbour friend who is an architect, another a graphic designer as well as families with multiple connections requirements. Everyone loves it.
I have not cancelled my old DSL copper infrastructure service in interest to have a fail-safe system, Redundant Systems and technical plans can save the day, as used in avionics, broadcast, and military systems do. With my two connections, perhaps I shall prevail.

Hey Wolf... hope is also well with you and Sarah! Thanks for the info. I have checked on Sonic availability a number of times since we moved to this house 11 years ago. They used to just say it was currently unavailable. This year is the first time they gave me the option to prepay. It may be that simply canvassing addresses in the past didn't work for them financially and now they want a downpayment from enough interested customers before proceeding. It could also be that it is more difficult to install the infrastructure in neighborhoods located in the Oakland Hills. Either way it still isn't available here. Would be nice to have choices...

Ting works that same way in my area. The only way I would prepay was if I knew with almost certainty they were going to connect our area but from how I've seen them roll out so far you are no more likely to get hooked up by prepaying than waiting until they decide your area is next on the list.

There is some outfit called Glo putting in high-speed broadband service all over this area... the only reason I am aware is because the utility I work for has to mark underground services before they bury the cable.

So this must be a thing. I also didn't realize Comcast was that big. They kinda' sucked here 17 years ago, so I cut them off.

We have Comcast.  When we moved last April we had some issues and they sent out a technician who had recently moved here from the Ukraine.   He told us that when he came to the U.S. he was shocked to find that we were still on cable.   He told us Russia and the Ukraine were all on fiber optics and cable was considered obsolete technology.

Us flyover types have Metronet fiber optic; not only is the picture significantly better, but I don'y have to deal with Comcast - who are 1/3 of the Unholy Trinity Of Customer "Service" (the others being Sprint & Dell).

This 'Glo' cable being installed is fiber optic cable, just being clear...
