Title: Jerry Harrison Adrianne Belew-Remain in Light Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
Post by: StephenR on October 05, 2022, 03:26:56 PM
One of the highlights of this years Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco was the Jerry Harrison and Adrianne Belew set featuring the material from the Talking Heads LP Remain in Light. Excellent band and performance! I had never heard Julie Slick, she is an amazing bass player who has been playing with Adrianne Belew's power trio for 16 years. Enjoyed everything about this set especially the bass playing. My wife went to the festival, I stayed home to take care of our 11 year old Malamute Samson and watched the live HSB stream. So far HSB has not added this years streams to their online archives but someone put the Remain in Light set up on Youtube. Highly recommended!

Malamute my ass.  Samson is really a small horse!  I hope he's o.k.

Samson is actually nowhere near as big as he looks. If you wet him down it is easy to see that he is mostly hair, his skull is big but his body is athletic and lean since he is a working breed. He only weighs 75lbs which is less than a lot a retrievers who look much smaller weigh. He is okay just old and starting to have the same issues as every old dog, he has more difficulty walking and no longer has complete control over his bodily functions. We can't leave him alone very long anymore, need to be available if he has go go out. Sad to see him aging, naturally he has no idea what is going on but must be frustrated that his body doesn't work the way it used to. I can certainly relate to that as I get older, too.

I am certain that Samson’s love is massively huge.

The horn section with Jerry and friends is very cool.

That is a great share!  I've been following the Power Trio for a while and Julie is a very innovative bass player.  It motivates me to play more.

Thanks for posting this one!  Also...it's Adrian Belew.  At first thought reading the thread title I assumed it was his daughter playing bluegrass, hee hee

That's a great set! It's funny as it shows how some artists are made their best by the band they're in; David Byrne has made lots of music since, but it seems his best was with Talking Heads, but I will admit I have not heard all of his solo stuff, sometimes the players are the perfect editors...

Glad to find out that everyone is enjoying this set as much as I did. Due to an aversion for large crowds I usually attend only one day of the festival each year but a combo of not wanting to be packed in with a lot of strangers during the pandemic and lack of doggie day care made me skip this year. My wife and a lot of our friends were right down in front at this stage and all get "cameo" appearances in the official stream. She said it was even better being there. To prepare for hearing this Remain in Light tribute I listened to the Fela Kuti LP that was David Byrnes inspiration for the musical direction of this batch of tunes... "Afrodisiac". Highly recommend this Fela release!

Finally got a chance to watch some of the Harrison/Belew video.  Enjoyed it; thanks for posting!
