Title: 50 year old teck
Post by: funkyjazzjunky on October 01, 2022, 01:57:28 PM
My nephew cannot understand how an Alembic from the 70's sounds better than his Warwick and MTD basses.

Well now he knows he can make different bass purchase choices in the future. I will watch out for his new alembic posting here.

I wish my nephew had some interest in playing bass. But anything else is his thing. That kid plays a number of instruments extremely well. I guess no time for bass.

None of my relatives have ever shown an interest in learning to play a musical instrument so i have no-one to leave any to.

My 77 bass, which is three years younger than I, is the best sounding instrument I have every played. Which is why my bass collection has almost disappeared.

blasphemous!

:-)

I am fortunate - my son is a heck of a decent bassist.  He will get my Distillate.  Hopefully a grandchild will be in the future and it can continue to be passed down for generations to come.

None of my relatives have ever shown an interest in learning to play a musical instrument so i have no-one to leave any to.

Neither of my daughters play a stringed instrument and my grandchildren are too young at this time to know what they will do. Though I do have hope for my 2yo granddaughter as she has advanced from banging on the piano to more or less repetitive melodic patterns. None of my nieces or nephews show any interest in playing music either.

If I don't do it first I am planning on having my wife sell my Vox Mk IV, Hagstrom 8, Ibanez George Benson and Fender Duo Sonic. I was thinking of having my wife donate my 5-string Orion, Jazz Bass and Brown Bass to a high school music department. I'm still undecided on what to do with my Fender 6-string acoustic, Orion fretless and Series 1. Maybe by the time I need to decide one of the grandkids will have shown an interest and as a result will have the decision made for me.

Alembic is one of the few companies that produces fantastic instruments since its inception.  We like the old ones for nostalgia, sure, but there is no preferred or "better" era such as some of the other legacy electric instrument manufacturers seems to have had.

That's my thought though.  As to the OP, that kid got a schooling on Alembic tonez!

Yep, for what they are vintage Alembics are under priced.

That penny dropping about new vs vintage alembic was what eventually pushed me into getting a vintage series shorty. For years i had been saving for a custom or a recent series shorty. I got close a couple of times but other things took my bass budget. Then i found my budget would stretch to a vintage bass if i looked carefully which is what found. There is nothing i can tell from it's sound that belies it's age.
