This AM, a friend asked me a question the answer to which requires knowledge postdating my exit from the kwippie biz - but that's OK - as an historian, I am aware that the key is not knowing stuff, but rather where to look, and, as my Dago-American in-laws like to say, "I know a guy". Well, a bunch of guys (and gals). So:
If someone on a tight budget wanted to take a feed from an analog sound board and feed it to a laptop via USB, how would they go about it?
Thanks in advance for all the all the well-informed answers I'm about to get.

You'd just need a simple interface between the board and laptop.
You can find new ones starting around $50 these days.
Allen & Heath, Mackie, Yamaha and others even make little tiny mixers that have usb connectivity.

Thanks. I'll look into those interfaces. The mixer isn't needed; this will be going into an existing system.

I use a Presonus Audiobox. I own the a precursor to the USB 96. If you are just looking to record the mains in stereo these would do the job for under $100. Presonus also includes DAW software. They have multi-input audio interfaces as well but those cost quite a bit more. At the moment there is one on Amazon for $79 with the Presonus Studio One and Ableton DAW software included.

On the advice of 2 former colleagues who are, or have been in the past 2 years, still professionally active, I have recommended the M-Audio Duo.
Thanks all for your consideration of this.

Yup. M-audio duo works. Very simple to use.
