Title: Flats for Long Scale Bass
Post by: hammer on March 15, 2022, 08:52:14 PM
I typically use TI flats on all my basses. My recently acquired Moonstone bass, with Alembic electronics of course, has a tailpiece set so far back (38” from tailpiece to nut) that TI long scales just aren’t long enough.

I spoke with the people who distribute TIs and was informed that while their super longs would probably fit, the tension would be so low I would probably not like them. Does anyone have recommendations for other flats they have liked on extra long scale basses? Or has anyone used TI flats in their super long version.

I initially thought about just shaving off some of the silk at the nut end of the long scale strings but that would leave me with up to  one inch of the reduced diameter part of the string designed to wrap around a post sitting below the nut.

I second the Labella low tension flats, I recently switched over to them on all my basses and love them.  Note that they have a very smooth feel, which will be different from the TIs, but I like the feel.  They sound great too.  :)
