Had my first gig of the year on Sunday night. My next one is with my NotStrictlyJazz Quartet plus guests.
-
Go Jazzy! 8)
My first one is next Friday. (not tomorrow night, the next one...)
-
Thank you, it's been a long time.
I hope your gigs go well, it's great getting back on stage after a break.
I have been offered a number of gigs and projects this year from reggae deps on guitar and bass to a local guy starting a new band and is writing some John Scofield type fusion jazz..... I said yes to that one even though it's way out of my comfort zone to develop interesting basslines for that genre ..... I wonder if JJ does lessons? :-)

Nice poster!
-
Apparently there is streaming available at the venue so if i can use it for free 🤔i will post a link here. Starts at 17:00 GMT
-
That’s today, cool!
-
Unfortunately the person I needed to contact regarding that was not in yesterday so streaming didn't happen.
Also we had problems with the venue's PA and the two keyboard players did not have anything coming out of their stage monitors.
Despite all that, it was a really good and enjoyable gig, sold out and they loved every track.
-
Just done first set. A rare dep guitar gig.
-
Such a beautiful guitar! :)
-
JC-120?
-
Yep and quite an old one that I bought from a friend who used it as a combo for electric piano.
-
Got a nice festival gig coming up soon.
ReggaeLand Festival in Milton Keynes 30th July 2022
http://reggaeland.co.uk (http://reggaeland.co.uk)
Believe it or not it is 40years this year since Pass The Dutchie went to No 1 in the UK Charts and a UK tour is currently being booked for later in the year.
Just for clarity, i wasn't in the band back then so can't claim any credit, or royalties for it.
I have been in the band since 2004 firstly as guitarist and now bass player powering the band with alembic basses since 2012.
-
I have a dep guitar gig coming in September called "King Of Reggae"
https://www.redditchpalacetheatre.co.uk/whats-on/all-shows/the-king-of-reggae-the-man-the-music
Also Simmerdown Reggae festival in Handsworth, Birmingham UK
https://simmerdownarts.com
Also a jazz gig with a local recording artiste at the Birchfield Jazz Festival in Birmingham UK
-
just got home from a gig depping on bass for a local UB40 tribute band at a wedding reception.
Gig went fine though not something I would want to do regularly.
-
18 years is quite a tenure in such an established band. Well done, Jazzy. 8)
-
It is, I had a break for about a couple of years though when there was a change of lineup and then returned as dep bass player in 2012 and got asked to hang on to the role.
-

Hi Jazzy. Watching now on the big screen. Very cool! Tina (Senior Management) said you look grayer/greyer than when you visited those many years ago. My response? “So do we!” She also likes your shirt. So what are you plugging my guitar into?
Bill, tgo
-
Had a JC-120 upthread. I mused for a while over what that guitar must sound like through thst thing!
-
Just got backstage for tonight’s gig at Reggaeland Festival.
-
Looks like a nice venue and a good crowd, Jazzy... have a great show! 8)
-
Thanks Greg it was a good gig. i decided overkill on the bass front and took my Redwood series bass, which i was reliably told sounded huge FOH. Probably helped that i went back to using my Sf-2 again as my sole preamp for reggae gigs and gave the desk SF-2 out through my Radial Pro DI instead of direct off my bass.
-
... gave the desk SF-2 out through my Radial Pro DI instead of direct off my bass.
Sounds (literally and figuratively) fabulous. Giving the FOH such a refined sound should make their job simple.
-
I used to do that on some gigs before lockdown because we had many sound guys who didn’t know how to live mix reggae music. Judging from the bands on before us, i made the right call as there as no weight in the drum and bass.
-
Ok Tonight's gig at the closing ceremony for the Commonwealth Games with Musical Youth. Gonna be a huge global audience so my biggest gig to date. Apparently 1.2 billion watched the opening ceremony!
Series II bass well be ready for action.
If i can find a live stream link i will post here.
-
Looks like a great gig... enjoy!
-
Thanks, it was
-
Nice one Jazzyvee!!

-
That's awesome, Jazzy. Take a bow. 8)
-
Nice... looks like it was a lot of fun, good job!
-
Interesting what a gig can do. Today i got facebook message from a company doing custom bass guitars in California, and to let them know if i'm interested. Bold move considering I was sporting an Alembic on the video i posted on facebook that they commented earlier on :-)

That video was awesome. And the Alembic shows up beautifully! Well done!

I have a gig with Musical Youth at Hootananny in Brixton on 27th October.

-
Hope the gig went well, Jazzy.
Curious; what is the relationship of Brixton to Brighton? Just proximity? I have heard them mentioned together, as if related in some way.
-
Well they are 50 miles apart, ( round the corner in American terms), but Brixton is a suburb of London and Brighton is town on the South coast virtually a straight line south. I guess they are about 1.5 hrs ish apart by car. I don't know of any relationship historically between them but a member who lives in London may have an idea.
-
American folksongs don't always get the geography right. ::)
"Brighton Camp", eventually became "The Girl I Left Behind Me". I was reminded of it recently; our (now-defunct) neo-oldtyme band wrote some original lyrics and remade the melody four centuries later into a song titled "The One I'm Leaving Behind". Somewhere in some very old lyrics though, I seem to remember mention of marching from Brixton to Brighton. Kinda' makes sense. It was a fife-n-drum march tune.

I had a last minute dep gig last night with a band covering UB40 and John Holt songs. Got a call on Thursday evening about 7:30pm as the band were at rehearsal and their dep had just let them down at the last minute. So had to finish my shopping, eat then head over to rehearsal crash through their set of about 20 songs with 7 or 8 sons i’d never played before. Tried learning them between Friday evening and Saturday morning then did the gig last night. As much as i love gigging, i don’t like enjoy it as much if i know i’m unprepared. Especially with well known tracks like reggae where the bassline pretty much defines the tune. So i had a few fumbling moments trying to find the note whilst also trying not to lose the groove. Turned out fine overall so they have asked me to be their first call dep.
-
Sounds like you did a great job, Jazzyvee! :)
-
What is "dep["?
Paul (who already knows What is Hip)
-
in this context Deputy, or stand in musician for a band member who can't do a gig.
-
O'er 'ere in the Colonies, that'd be known as Substitute = 'Sub' or 'Subbing'. ;D
*Well done on the depping, JazzyVee.
~Gregory (who never tires of English-to-American translations...)

Just a bump to my next gig which is on Thursday
I have a gig with Musical Youth at Hootananny in Brixton on 27th October.
https://hootanannybrixton.co.uk/musical-youth-40th-anniversary/
I still haven't decided which bass to take. It was going to be my Series II because I'd planned to also pass buy the company that makes the Carbon Fibre cases but timing won't allow.
-
Just got home from this gig and winding down with a cuppa. I used my black Maple & purpleheart Europa (reggae) bass.
It went really well the sound quality especially the bass was exceptional and when I got off stage I had a number of conversations with punters including some who told me they were bass players raving about the gig, my playing and the sound of my bass. Good to hear and honestly that bass is such an incredible sounding instrument and played through F-1X/SF-2, power amp and Barefaced cabs is just something else. I think giving the FOH my sound from the post pre-amp signal via the DI worked really well. It is something i have been doing for reggae gigs as my norm unless the sound guys explicitly request otherwise.
-
Sounds like must have been a good time, Jazzy. Knowing how our gear works sure helps the soundcrew.
Punter = Patron? I looked around at various definitions, none say this specifically, but I gather they must be audience members.

Same - had to google it. Learning proper English here and Spanish at work! 👍🏼

Just finished tonights gig.
Used europa into my Stanley clarke acoustic preamp into the power amp input on the Ampeg head. Sounded better than going with my bass into the front.
The fender jazz belongs to T’pau bass player who told me he has an alembic Epic bass.
