OK, I'll spare you all the heart-jolt the headline gave me - this isn't our JJ; nor is it the NFL coach, the cartoonist, the NASCAR driver, or the Muscle Shoals studio guitarist. But I just found out Chicago blues guitarist Jimmy Johnson died Jan. 31 at age 93. He had a good, long run, but it is still hard to hear; he was a superb picker & singer, and a really nice guy.

Whew. That was a close one! Sad news indeed, but 93 is a pretty good score.
I once played a gig with guitarist Mike Miller in his native South Dakota and whoever wrote the program notes mistakenly included that Jimmy Johnson's bio for me. All part of the fun of having a common name.

The common name thing can lead to some funny coincidences. There was a Richard Thompson tour where he was touring the USA with British upright jazz bassist Danny Thompson (ex Pentangle member). One of the reviews mentioned that Danny was Richard's son.... pretty funny since he is older than Richard, both Richard and Danny got a good chuckle out of that.
93 is certainly a good run and the blues JJ leaves behind a lot of great music. Been sad to watch the passing of all the old classic blues cats.
