Title: Show Me the Picture: The Story of Jim Marshall
Post by: StephenR on March 07, 2022, 09:56:30 AM

My wife and I watched the Jim Marshall documentary last night on Hulu and it was really a great flick, highly recommended! I was familiar with a lot of his work, particularly the shots of rock musicians but wasn't aware that he also got so many key shots of the civil rights movement etc. Strange and kind of disturbed dude but he had the magic touch and an amazing eye for capturing the essence of what was before him visually. My favorite sequence was when they showed his photos of Thelonious Monk and his family in Monk's apartment. I read the Monk bio last year and seeing pictures of where he lived helped complete the mental picture I had formed while reading it. The book did a pretty good job of describing his living space but seeing his grand piano in the kitchen right up against the stove and how tiny the space was was illuminating. The humility of Monk and how proud he was of his family came shining through, it was not glamorous in the way you expect public figures to build their image and you could almost sense the level of trust involved in inviting Jim into his home to shoot. Below is a link to the trailer on youtube, I think the movie is also available to view via Apple TV if you don't subscribe to Hulu. If you have any interest in Jim's work you will not be disappointed...
