Title: My Stool Causing PA Pops - It’s a Mystery?
Post by: lbpesq on October 10, 2021, 12:45:03 PM
I have a metal stool with a vinyl seat, similar to the one below, in my studio.   Often, but not always, when I stand up after sitting on the stool, with the PA on, there will be a few loud pops through the PA.   This happens when I’m playing guitar (I use a wireless system), and sometimes when I don’t even have a guitar on.   It’s been a mystery for a few years.   Anyone have any idea what would cause this?

Bill, tgo

Static?

You could try earthing yourself and see if you still get the same interference.

Bill, could it be static electricity from the vinyl seat?

I don't know Bill - I believe you have recording equipment; could you give a sample of your stool?

My parents had the TV cable running along the floor along the wall in the ridge left by the laminate flooring, and after a few years the signal started cutting out because of the flooring moving as people walked over it, and expanding and shrinking with the seasons, slowly damaging the cable. Might be something similar.

if it's a vinyl seat and you're sliding your pants across it when you get on and off then it's most certainly static electricity.  The drier the air, the worse it's gonna get.  you could try some anti-static spray or putting a grounded conductive cover over the seat similar to a grounded wrist strap that you're supposed to use when working on PC boards.

I'd just try sitting on a towel (on the stool!) and see if that helps.  Vinyl is goofy.

See if it does it with a wooden stool.

Bingo!

just don't put a vinyl seat pad over it!   ::)
